I just ran across a very nice Squier 51 in burst for $165 and I was wondering if it was worth it. I know they sold for as little as $69 new, but I also know that they are no longer made and getting harder and harder to find. I thought I would get on here and ask everyone's opinion.

If it's in good shape, sure, I'd buy it for that price. The $69 price tag is a bit deceptive. I think the original retail price was in the $150-200 range. When the model was discontinued and placed on clearance, the usual price was around $100. $69 wasn't unheard of, but it certainly wasn't the norm.

Bottom line: If the instrument is in good shape and plays well, $165 seems reasonable to me. 8)

How does it play? How does it sound? Do you like it? I'd pay $100-$120 for one depending on the condition, playability, and tone. But you have to understand I am not really looking for a 51 Squier at this time.

I forgot to mention that it's on EPay, so I can't play it or hear it. The price I mentioned earlier is a "Buy it Now" and includes shipping. I do love the style of the Squier 51, and the fact that it's the only original design that Squier has ever done. I've wanted one ever since I first saw them.

Well...that's the thing about Ebay isn't it. Sometimes you can get a real steal -BUT- you could get a complete piece of crap. Honestly this is perhaps the main reason that I simply don't buy guitars off Ebay. Parts? yes. Microphones? Yes. Drum hardware? Oh yea! Guitars? Nope...no way. I simply will NOT buy a guitar that I haven't actually played myself. I've only done it once and I got burned (brand new guitar with a cold solder joint at the jack). That said, as has already been stated, these are getting a bit harder to find. -If- the instrument is in really good shape, then the price is fair...not great by any means, but fair. But the question is simply is the guitar -really- in good shape? You can only tell just so much by pictures and a description over the internet.

As an Ebay buyer and seller myself, my advice is -caution-. First, check the seller's feedback...is this person reputable??? Is there -ANYTHING- in the auction that looks suspicious or would make you think that the seller won't stand behind the product (such as "item sold AS IS", no refunds!)? I would also ask for and -verify- the serial number as well. It's unlikely that someone would fake a Squier but you'll still want to make sure the instrument isn't on any "hot sheets" somewhere...I would imagine there's nothing worse than being on stage and having someone show up with the cops in the middle of a gig to get their own guitar back from you!

-If- you feel safe and sure that this is going to be a reasonable transaction then I would use a credit card via Paypal so that if something does go wrong, you have some degree of protection...both from Paypal -and- your credit card company. In other words if you receive the guitar and something's screwed up, you contact your credit card company -and- Paypal and report it and ask for a stop payment until the seller resolves the issue for you. You could still get stuck with return shipping charges but at least you won't be out the full amount of the purchase. On the other hand if -ALL- of that doesn't reasonably apply, then just walk away...there -are- other fish in the sea.

Good Luck,
Jim

If you want it and you are ok with the price then I would go for it . You can always upgrade , repair or adjust it to your specs. If it makes you happy , then go for it!

Thanks everyone for your input, it really did help make my decision easier. In the end I decided to buy the '51 and it should be arriving today from Wisconsin via UPS.

I'm very anxious and also nervous because I've never ordered anything of this size from the internet. However the seller assured me that it would be wrapped and boxed completely secure for the trip and shipped it UPs with insurance so if something does happen I'll at least get my money back. He had 100% positive feedback and seems very trustworthy so all should be ok as long as UPS fulfills their end of the agreement and takes care of my package.

When it arrives I'm going to document the unwrapping process with photos and will post some pics in a few days. Thanks again.

Bill

If it plays good I might buy it at that price. Why not?

It plays and sounds great. The action is nice, but could probably be a little lower. The guy I got it from has many guitars but (according to his wife) it was time to thin down the collection so he let this one go. He set it up himself and installed a Guitar Fetish bridge and even smoothed and polished the fret ends.

The pic does not do this guitar justice. If I didn't know better I would think it was new.

I recently got a great deal on a like new Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and they sound great together. I am really very happy with my new setup.

Thanks again,
Bill
