Is it normal to have a butchered neck pocket like this on a brand new Classic Vibe?

Does this look right to you on a brand new guitar? The dealer store claims this is normal and only the highest quality Fenders are clean in the neck pocket area. Fender hasn't commented on these yet.

When I took my neck off mine a few months ago it did not look likr that. That's aweful. Maybe send a picture to the Squier Customer Service and see if that is a normal neck pocket.

I'm not exactly sure if it's common, but I have the same thing on a couple of mine. My black and white one looks like that, and so did another one I sold a few years ago.

I think it's a little messed up that they didn't at least clean the shavings out of the pocket, but as long as the neck goes on straight I don't think it's much of a problem. My black guitar plays just fine and it has a CV neck on it right now. I know it's kind of a bummer to see, but the guitar should still be ok. You should definitely get those shavings out of there though.

This is the neck pocket on my CV 60s Strat. One of the cleanest neck pockets I've seen. Even better than on my Highway One.

Looks to me like someone has taken a chisel and tried to shave down the pocket on yours. For whatever reason.

Well, here's some shots of a couple of my instruments...

This first one is of my '85 MIJ Squier and as you can see, it's -very- clean to say the least...

This second shot here is actually of my '96 MIM but my '08 CIC Squier Standard and even the '04 Indo Squier Standard I had had nearly identical workmanship...while not as clean as the MIJ, still very good quality..

From my experience with Squiers, what I'm seeing in your pictures really isn't "normal" -at all-. I really have to agree with flanker in that it does look as though someone took a chisel to that neck pocket. In my mind this can really only indicate two things...either something happened at the factory where the neck pocket wasn't cut to specs on the machine (which having been a machinist at one time, is certainly possible) -or- the guitar simply isn't brand new as the store apparently said it was. Since I don't know where you bought this instrument, it's hard to be judgmental about the store owner...if it was purchased at a major guitar shop such as Guitar Centers, then it should be new (although with the GC/Musician Friend "no questions return policy" they do sell A LOT of used guitars as "new") but if it was purchased at a smaller "Ma & Pa" store...not all shop owners are honest and not all sales people really know what they're talking about...in fact many don't (even at Guitar Centers).

As other's have said, the guitar would probably still be fine and playable but personally if I bought that brand new, I'd take it back in to the store where I bought it and throw a serious shit-fit and either ask for another one (and check it before you left) or just get my money back and buy somewhere else...probably the latter. Regardless of whether that came from the factory that way or it got butchered at the store (or even before the store got it), that's pretty shoddy work there...even the cheapest Squier Bullets are still made on a CNC machine these days, so that tells me -something- happened to this guitar that just wasn't right. Even if it were only a $120 Bullet, I'd still want my money's worth!

These are as always, just my own personal opinions...please use them only for what you feel they are worth!

Good Luck,
Jim

I believe it is a really bad factory made adjustment
to the neck pocket. You can see that the grain will
only allow it to be chiseled in a reverse direction. It
will cause the angle on the chisel to be to steep and
gouge..... Someone with too little time and too little
knowledge did this and no one culled it. Usually, when
they do this, they will put some sloppy filler in it. And
then they will most likely shim it because it won't fit
right.

To me, it seems they just went too far. There is not
enough flush surface for the neck to contact with. I
believe that may effect sound and sustain.

I am very sorry this happened to you. I know how it
feels to get a lemon. :(

It happens with other makers also.

You should get your money back if it is new.

I have taken the neck off of two CV 60's and both were absolutely clean and immaculate. In fact, both of them were the cleanest in the neck pocket and under the pickguard that I have ever seen.

This may be an old post however reading here and at least one utterly foolish and irresponsible reply I have to add my view point.
58 years a bass player and I bought my first new fender in 1963 thats a lot of basses and experience later I have never had a Fender with a neck like that. I have never known or heard of anyone in any band that had a Fender delivered like that! Stupid replies that are in my non humble opinion total lies. Fender never ever have distributed an instrument in that condition, EVER! I suggest if a member here needs to voice an opinion it should be honest and based on supportable evidence! Today at 71 years of age I still own and restore Fenders, It's a hobby and a passion and I help lots of older band members by working on their instruments pro bono as the Americas say! I can tell from experience that that neck socket was dead clean when it left production. I can tell that the damage I see was either done within the packing and despatch area or by some person once the instrument was unpacked! The texture of the wood before and after being tampered with is clearly obvious to anyone with 2 brain cells, so I just scrape in! If you have a genuine complaint you send it back, Don't You?'
Genuin complaint right? It goes back! if not why not? Why complain here? Be fair. Be Honest!

You're of course right, that doesn't look anything like a normal (Fender or) Squier neck pocket.

But, the original poster signed on the forum in 2008, posted one post (this one) in 2010 and that's also the last time he/she/it logged in. So, your good advice may sadly be in vain...
