from wikipedia:

CY: C = China, Y = Yako (Taiwan), the serial number prefix is followed by a 2 number year.

For example

"CY97" = made by Yako in 1997.
CY serials are usually used on Crafted in China Squiers. Some Chinese made Gretsch guitars also have a CY serial number.

hope this helps :D

A Squier made in Taiwan in 1980? That's pretty odd.
As far as I know the first ones were made in Japan in '82.

Yea, I've seen that before. The "8" must mean something else that isn't updated in the Wiki page. If you ignore the 8, I think it's actually telling you it's a 2009 Affinity. I could be wrong, but that's how I would read that.

it would help if you could post pictures.

create a photo bucket account (its free) and upload you images on there. then copy the img code from each picture to this website so we can see them. it would probably help a lot.

FYI the Affinity series and Chinese Squiers didn't exist in the mid to late 80s. At that point there were only Japanese and Korean Squiers ( I have also seen a few late 80s Indian made Squier IIs), Chinese Production didn't begin until the mid 90s.

Sounds like it is an 08/09 Affinity
