I was lucky enough to have my first guitar be an old (even for then) Fender Duosonic. It was a nice guitar to learn on compared to some of my buddies who were learning on horrible Hondo and Memphis Les Paul copies. Today's beginners who start out on the Squiers of today have no idea how good they have it.

Squier is for professional, see here: http://www.squierguitars.com/news/index ... rticle=122

this guy is one of the best guitarist in Malaysia! People in Malaysia, regardless their age respect him for his skills and talent.

it is the best alternative if Fender MIA is totally out of your budget.

My early 90s Korean made Squier Stratocaster looks almost exactly the same as my '03 MIM Fender Standard Stratocaster (both are black with maple fretboard, and both say "Fender" on the headstock). They play and feel the same to me. I keep the Squier tuned to an open G chord for playing Rolling Stones stuff ala Keith Richards.
I've also had Squier Affinity guitars (I have a Squier Affinity Fat Strat now). These are great guitars for anyone....very well made and they play and sound wonderful. It's too bad they didn't have guitars like this 40 or 50 years ago when I started out.
There's no truth is saying that a major difference between the two is that Squiers need a set up and Fenders don't. All guitars...Fenders, Squiers, Gibsons,...ALL guitars benefit from a good professional set up. Squiers are very good guitars on their own merit. Don't listen to the snobs.

Excellant advice. A good set up will help any guitar. Squier gets a bad rap because Fender is one of the top guitars in the world and a lot of people just associate it as a having a better made guitar. I own a Stratocaster from both lines, (a CV 60 and a Highway 1) and I love both of them equally. They both serve my purpose.

Well, certainly! I guess I'll say what everyone else has said: don't pay attention to the fact that it says made in Indonesia or China. The fact is, manufacturing techniques have gotten a lot better and quality control has improved to unimaginable heights. Honestly, my low-end Squier feels better than some Standard Fenders, and the neck feels better than, dare I say, a Highway One. Absolutely no bad fret edges, and with some good pickups paired with the right amp, I swear I can't tell the difference in sound between mine and an MIA standard.

Only for beginners? Nah, that's silly.

I've been playing 22 years, have 2 Squiers which serve me faithfully and reliably. Rock solid, no tuning issues, and they both sound great. I'm currently saving up for 4 more Squier Strats.

I love it when people talk s**t about the name on the headstock of my guitars, because my guitar always shuts them up.

Some people put their pride and ego into the name on the headstock, other people put their pride in their playing ability and sound like themselves whether they're playing through a $6,000. guitar or a $500. guitar.

I'm proud to be in the 2nd catagory.

Squiers rock. Period. There's no other guitar I'd rather own. If someone gave me a $1500. Fender Strat I'd sell it and buy a few more Squiers.

Nothing wrong with squier. I own a '99 Indo made Fender Squier slightly modded. Plays and feels better than $500-1000 fenders at the shop. Some of the Made in China Squiers feel like cheap garbage, but it's all in how it's set up. You have to try out a bunch to get fret action that feels good for you. I started playing on a modded squier strat in the mid 90's and never looked back.

The hobbyist rating your concerned about is based on the number of posts you've made to this forum. at a 100 you make amatuer so don't let it bother you. it shows you spend time doing other things in life besides posting here.

Yeah, I am anything but a professional musician. I work in the field of healthcare. I do consider myself a hobbyest when playing.

I still use squier tele california series till now..and that was good enough for me. Actually, i also want to play with fender telecaster american vintage series.
But now, Squier Tele is enough for my music.. :D

Didn't Jeff Healey play a Squier all his career? He seemed to do ok with it.

I've been playing for 25 years, and am a semi-pro in two working bands, and I bought my first Squire this year.

Tried a Squier Classic Vibe while shopping for a new Strat - I had wanted a Fender Deluxe, but having A/B's the Classic Vibe against an American Standard in the shop was amazed how good it was for the price, and found the neck more playable.

Bought the Squier - admittedly I put in some Bare Knuckle Irish Tour pickups, but the standard pickups were not bad at all, at least as good as the pickups in my '85 MIJ Fender Strat.

Now it holds it own against any of my other guitars, in fact it's my number 2 after the MusicMan Silhoutte and I've lost count of the number of people who rave about the sound and then see the logo and say "oh - it's a Squier, I thought they were crap".

The only thing wrong with it was that a couple of frets needed the ends dressing, but otherwise it is as much a professional standard guitar as the Silhouette, the SG, the two Fender Strats and the Tele that I own.

There are some bad Squiers out there - but the newest ones are very impressive, and ridiculously cheap for what they are.
