No actually they are quite good guitars for the price ,and the playability is also good, I prefer the affinity's. I had a guitar made for me back in 1990 and I still have it it's a alder wood strat style body with a curly maple neck and a 1 pick up in the bridge position a Billy Gibbons Pearly gates with a stock fender tremolo and sperzel tuners its kicks booty ... butt the affinity is more versatile ,

if you dont want to be seen with a squire guitar just buy a standard squire then go to ebay and buy a new fender stat headstock for like 100 bucks....or just sand off the squire logo. squires sound great. just stay away from the packs and affinitys D: i have an affinity. sounds bad. but my friends standard squire plays supuh great!

Affinities play nice, but they don't sound too great.

Squiers where I live, are only for rich musicians. Hell, I've seen people gig with the most banged up guitars ever, and the squier is definitely awesome. My cousin has a blue reliced affinity strat and it plays like a dream.

if your gonna buy a classic vibe or the ones at the top of the line then I would say they are really good and reliable but then again you could add a little more money and get a MIM fender... :)

When I got my Classic Vibe I paid $299.00. A new MIM Standard Strat would have cost me around $550.00. That's $250.00 difference. I just couldn't justify paying that much more for the MIM when the quality of the Squier was just as good if not better in some areas. :)

Are squier's a beginners instrument? Thats a very general question.

Any squier will do what a guitar 10 times the price will do, but perhaps not as well. It wont sound as good, wont feel as sturdy, the quality of craftsmanship wont be in it. but it still will do everything a custom shop of the same spec will do.

And then you can get some truly awesome squier's. The Classic vibe for instance. Look here http://www.tdpri.com/forum/telecaster-discussion-forum/114549-classic-vibe-tele-owners-club.html . This is a site with many experienced players and folk who own very expensive tele's and yet many of these people are rushing out for the CV tele! that says something.

The guitar supposedly knocks the socks of any MIM, and even gives Am Std's a run for their money, which is unreal, considering its 1/3 of the price of an Am Std.

As others have said, forget about the name, the brand the label. just play whatever guitar suits you best, thats within your budget.
If you can afford a 1000 dollar guitar, and you go to a music store, play a bunch of guitars, and a squier afinity feels best in your hands, then thats the guitar you should purchase and play.

Before buying my Squier VM Thinline Tele, I played a bunch of Teles (thinlines and regular) from MIAs, MIMs, and Squier. I am not so bold to agree with the "knock the socks off" comment, but the Squiers easily held their own to an almost shocking degree. The differentiation in these lines on the Strat side of the house, though - to me - was much more obvious.

i own three squire guitars...along with 4 fender and 2 epiphone and 3 gibson and a bundh of others.
my squires are first rate.!!
i have the '51....the afinity butterscotch tele...
and my newest one...the tele thinline.
my thinline took absolutely no sxtra setup other than string-heigth adjustment...plays as good or better than any guitar i've ever owned or played....the sound is amazing !!!
maybe i've just been lucky...
but i dont think so..squire is the best buy on the market in my opinion.
my new thinline is my favorite guitar..the shoreline gold finish is awesome.

squire standard a pretty good, just change the pickups, but the rest are not as good sound wise, early korean models sound good, squire's are easy to mod and get good result's hardware and pickups is what you change and you would have a decent guitar but mainly for newer players looking for a cheap alternative to a usa made one.

I have been playing guitar for many years. In that time I have owned 2 Squire Guitars. My first Squire was an 80's model called the HM series (HM III). It was a HSS with a licensed Floyd Rose Tremelo. It was one of my best guitars I ever owned. I would still have that guitar except my son accidently broke it several years ago (accident), and I modified it so much the only thing that was orginal on it was the body.

Several guitars later I purchaced a Highway 1 Stratocaster. This is one nice guitar. I liked it so much I no longer played my ESP LTD I bought a year earlier. This is my #1 guitar right now.

I ended up with G.A.S. (guitar aquisition syndrome) last weekend and decided that I did not need my ESP any more. I went out looking for a MIM Fender Stratocaster. I played many in the store. My eyes keeped going towards the Squire Classic Vibe 60's (not to mention the rave reviews I read about it). I played it and instantly knew what my next purchace was going to be. It is now my #2 guitar. Really good for Blues, Metal, and Rock.

So I have had 2 Squire guitars in my guitar journey and both were BA guitars. There are guitar snobs out there that look down on them, but you need to play a guitar before you can snub a guitar. I have played Gibsons that were crap, and no name brands that were awesome.

Play before you pay and ask yourself these questions:

1. Does the "expensive" model/brand really sound better or play better than the "cheap" guitar? (some do)

2. Does it matter to you what other people think about your equipment? (who cares?)

3. Do I have the money to spend on a $1000 or higher on a guitar or can I save a little money? (times are tough right now)

To answer your question, is Squire a beginners guitar? Only if you are a beginner.

RK

Very well put...I am a beginner and am not rich. Knowing just about nothing about guitars. I tried an Epiphone, Ibanez and a Squire. All lower end models. The Squire Strat just felt right and sounds good. I have only been playing since Nov 08.

OK - I have a used standard tele coming my way on Friday. What can I expect concerning the p/ups?

I have a spare GFS fatbody set lying around. I assume from what you say I should plan on swapping these in?

Squier guitars are said to begginers guitar mostly for its price and quality in the details like wood, pick-ups, circuitry, and even measures, but just like many have said, squier guitars play just like, or even better, than guitar many times more expensive, I personally own a Squier Bullet, according to FEnders 2006 catallog it was Fender's cheapest guitar but I just love that guitar, due to my ignorance didnt knew it could be fine tuned, well now that thing is just a beauty, its finetuned AND now its a mod Squier Bullet, got a bargain on a Lace Sensor pickup and jeez that thing sounds awesome!!, ANY fender instrument is a fine instrument, at first i felt kinda bad for owning a Squier but now... am in love with my Bullet.

Peace, and keep on rocking good people
