I also agree that there's no shame in playing Squiers (or any mid/low priced guitar). They're not just for beginners regardless of what you read on other forums by the handful of so called guitarists who turn their noses up at any lower-cost or budget-brand instruments. You know the type. The same ones that like to spend tons of money on the latest "boutique" effects and post pics of their rigs and pedalboards just to show off. It's a psychological thing more than anything else. As if playing a Squier will kill their image or something. They seem to forget how a certain Jimmy Page used to rock a cheap Danelectro on stage back in the day.

Truth is the only people at a gig who will actually care to notice what is says on the headstock of your guitar or what amps and effects you're using are other guitarists. If they're concerned about what kind of guitar and gear you have rather than your ability to play then they are more than likely jealous that you are able to rock that cheap guitar when they can barely tune their precious high dollar instruments and struggle to find their tone. There's certainly nothing wrong with choosing to play an American-made Fender, Gibson, Rickenbacker, etc.. If your a pro or semi-pro and can afford the higher-end stuff then more power to you, but in the end it's the person who plays the guitar, not the guitar that plays the person.

Are Squires only for beginners?

These are the guitars Steve Rothery (Marillion) uses when he’s out and about and in the studio:

Blade RH4 Classic Stratocaster
Blade Delta Telecaster
Blade Texas Standard Stratocaster
Steinberger Custom made double neck 12/6
Takamine 12 string acoustic
Takamine Santa Fe 6 string acoustic
*Squier Stratocaster

I think this pretty much answers this question. And if for nothing else a Squire is a great guitar for anyone interested in learning more about customization; tweaking, the electronics, etc. All in all I don't think anyone need be embarrassed about owning a Squire. It's a solid instrument.

I especially like the bantering in between sets by the real musicians in the crowd. The ones who are intriqued w/ the tones from my Squier Strat or the sound from the White Falcon w/Dynas.

I love playing out with both of them.
and there's nothing cooler than telling "the brand snobs" (who really shouldn't say a word as they've heard a pretty expensive Gretsch too for half the night!) that The Squier is kind of old (2000),
and completely stock!

Although many may never admit to it, I know for sure they're rethinking
the playability of a Squier.

I was at a friends house for a little get together and I brought my 2 Stratocasters. I played my Fender Highway 1 at first. He went to go get a beer. I switched guitars while he was out because we were playing a lot of Blues that night and the Fender is more for Rock. It was almost a half hour before he realized it was a Squier. He still did not believe me that it was all stock except the change of the pickguard and plastic pieces.

I've got a couple Squier's and they're great. I picked up an Afinity Strat for $220 after tax with strap locks, and it sounds pretty good. I've also got a Squier Affinity P Bass which is a work of art after about $200 bucks so that's a $320 guitar that sounds better then the MIM Fenders, keeping in mind the electronics are not stock. I also have a VM Tele Custom that I love to death as well.

When it comes down to it it's not the name on the headstock that matters. I've played Fender, Gibsons, Epiphones, Squiers, Musicmans, Ibanez, Jackson, Peavey. The lot and I've got 3 Squiers in my main bass and guitar rigs with no complaints from me or any one else.

For some reason certain people have the tendency to be "label whores". They bad-mouth anything that isn't in their idea of a "quality price range". Just because something is expensive doesn't mean it's any better. I played a $3,500 Gibson Explorer recently. You know what? It buzzed like crazy. A guitar that costs over $3000, and it buzzed. I paid $180 for my Affinity Strat, and my friend admits it sounds better than his G-400. I have played in jazz bands for 3 years, used the Squier live, it sounds great. Just because some people insist that price=quality doesn't mean they're right.

I love Squier so much that I just purchased another Squier II Stratocaster made in Korea. This time it's a 1989 SSS with rosewood fretboard in the same Pearl Metallic Frost as my HSS version. As soon as it arrives I'll post a pic.

Whether one chooses to purchase older models or current production Squiers they're all Fender designed/engineered and better then ALL the lower priced "off-brands" thus a better value.

BTW - There's no shame in being seen playing a Squier. Ask Jeff Healey what his headstock reads.
