Only for beginners? Nah, that's silly.

I've been playing 22 years, have 2 Squiers which serve me faithfully and reliably. Rock solid, no tuning issues, and they both sound great. I'm currently saving up for 4 more Squier Strats.

I love it when people talk s**t about the name on the headstock of my guitars, because my guitar always shuts them up.

Some people put their pride and ego into the name on the headstock, other people put their pride in their playing ability and sound like themselves whether they're playing through a $6,000. guitar or a $500. guitar.

I'm proud to be in the 2nd catagory.

Squiers rock. Period. There's no other guitar I'd rather own. If someone gave me a $1500. Fender Strat I'd sell it and buy a few more Squiers.

Ditto.

Every guitar tech will probably tell you the same . almost all china/korea are very decent if not good guitar but they lack in the finishing process ( fret polishing etc.. ) . probably to saved money ( they have to save somewhere ) and because they gonna be shipped oversea and will probably need a tune up anyway . its probably true for many mexican also .

Before making any talkshit about squier and various other company china made guitar ... spend 50 $ for a complete set up :

-Fret Polish
-Neck Adjustment -Fingerboard Clean-up & Re-Hydration
-Action Adjustment -Deep Electronic Clean-up
-Intonation Adjustment -Pickup Adjustment
-Radius Adjustment -Instrument Clean & Polish
-Nut Adjustment -Tuning Machines Adjustment
-Light Fret Level -Truss Rod Maintenance

and you will probably change your mind about your guitar and you might discover a whole new guitar .

two thumb up for Squier . ive like almost every model i tried out of the box .. ... after set up .. marvellous .
Because its china doesnt mean its cheap . sure you dont have the quality companent of american .. but theres 1/4 of the price .

the problem is that many dont wanna spend that 50 $ since they paid 200 $ for the guitar when they should because it seem pointless . but its not . in fact they often need it more than american since they already come with a good set up .

just my opinion .

Exactly! A set-up on a Squier can make a HUGE difference. And if you upgrade the nut ($10) and maybe the pickups ($50-60), you will have a sweet little guitar. Sure, the fine details won't be as nice as the Fenders, but why sweat the small stuff?

Thanks for defending the Squier.

Alot of people talk crap about my Squier guitar. I mean, it's my first electric guitar. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, and for 99 dollars (well then there's that stupid sales tax LOL) I got the whole set up--SP 10 amp(which everyone laughs at so I just call it my baby amp), bag, strap, picks, tuner, cable, free set of Fender strings, and stand. I think I spent more now on accessories than anything. :D I got an extra crummy cable for the tuner, more pics, pick holders (those sticky dunlop 1.99 ones are awesome--just stick on the amp), a gell pack for my strap because I have a back injury, a coffin case I got a rebate on and a price match, polishing cloth, extra cheapy strings, and a funky Badtz-Maru strap (looks like me without coffee).

I get the eyeroll and the "oh that's a BEGINNER guitar."

Well, I am a beginner, and I just tell them to shut the hell up.

Gotta start somewhere.

Thanks to this board, I feel better about my Squier because I've been getting crap about my guitar from one person. Like I said... (shuuuuut uuuuuuupppp)

PS--What do I say to have my guitar set up 'professionally'? I have a small guitar place near me. They swapped out the strings on my classical guitar and they did a fantastic job. I know I could probably do that myself but it looks trickier than an electric (which I plan on trying to do myself in the future when I get some cheapy strings to practice)

any guitar tech knows what a set-up entails. the basics are: making sure the truss rod is adjusted properly so the neck is neither too straight nor too curved. making sure the intonation is right. making sure the action is good (too high and it's hard to play, too low and there's buzzing).

as for Squiers, i'm almost to the point where I want people to keep thinking they suck as that will help keep the prices down. but on the other hand, i won't stop defending Squiers because they are often fantastic guitars for the money. and i hate to see Squier owners getting bashed by know-nothing label-whores. i know that some Squier owners are beginners, others are not wealthy enough to afford a Fender. neither of these two groups should be made to feel like their guitar is crappy just because it's not expensive. that's like saying a glass of coca cola doesn't taste good because it's not as expensive as a $300 bottle of wine. or that a new Toyota is a crappy car because it's not as expensive as a new BMW. it's just idiotic.

there's plenty of videos on youtube of advanced players tearing it up on Squiers, but unfortunately, some people refuse to let facts get in the way of their prejudices.

I have used Fender for 40 yrs now and one of my fav guitars was an 84 Squire.
I also have a Japanese Fender bought in 86 which has been my taxi for years.
strange as it seems i have a 77-78 Strat that i hardly ever play! nice sound etc but always has a bulky feel to it. i guess it's what you get use too. lol
incedently i am selling the 77-78 on ebay also a Mesa Mk III.

My Squire Standard Stratocaster is just great. I think I would stay away from the Bullets and Affinitys, though. I think they have thinner bodies. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. (As if I HAD to add that).

Wow I didn't know my thread would cause this much controversy.

I happen to own a Squier, btw. It's a strange one.

Strat body, but with none of the wasit cutouts, 3 pickups, and of all things, a telecaster headstock.

Sounds great unplugged.

I have one like that too. It's a Made in Japan SQ series bullet. They were made from '83 to '84. I love that guitar. So much mojo. Plays like butter. I've got made in USA strat pickups in there, and it sounds fantastic. Beautiful sunburst body, too.
I've played other Squiers too, and they're good instruments. But you've got one of the really good ones. Check the serial #... it should start with "SQ", and it should say "made in japan" on the headstock.

Mine looks like this, except it's sunburst, with black pickup covers (not original):
