Hi there,

Following on from my previous thread about me being a newcomer to guitar playing and my Squier a couple of you have advised changing the strings on it as the ones supplied with it are not very good.

If I changed the strings, what ones would anyone suggest I went for . There seems to be a huge selection out there which is very confusing to a total beginner like me!!

Any help would bemuch appreciated. Also could anyone give me a rough idea what it might cost to have the strings replaced and the guitar set up??

Very many thanks
:D :D

I use Ernie Ball Slinky 10s (lime green pack) on my HWY1 Telecaster. As for my Squier Custom II Tele I use Ernie Ball Super Slinkys 9s (pink pack). I usally change string once every two month or so. Most player change more often. EBs are good strings and cheap. Here's an awsome deal on six packs ($20) and you get a free Ernie Ball Power Peg Battery Powered String Winder
MSRP: $29.99. Enjoy your new Squier! I love mine. Here's the link

You are the third or fourth I have seen recommend Ernie Ball Slinky strings. Good enough for me.

What gauge string comes on the Squier Affinity stock? The EB Super Slinky 9 - 42 is what I keep having recommended to me. Would these go on a Squier Affinity without any further adjustment?

Answering my own question here...

From the specs:
Fender Super 250L, (.009 to .042) Nickel Plated Steel, P/N 073-0250-003

I'm assuming that the .009 to .042 corresponds to the string gauge. So the EB Super Slinky's should work without any further adjustments?

Your squier probably came with 9s. I like both 9s and 10s but if your intonation is right I'd stick with the 9s. The same deal is good with 9s at MF here's the link for 9s. http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=101789

Shouldn't need any other adjustment ..If so it's good to learn who to adjust the string height and adjust the intonation yourself..it's not rocket science. There many good sites online that will show you how. Here is one

I've used Dean Markley Strings for over 25 years. I've tried ghs, Daddario, Ernie ball, Fender, and some I can't remember but the Blue Steel's are My Fav. Be careful about changing gauges as they may bind up in the nut and cause tuning and breakage problems.

I prefer and really can recommend Dean Markley strings - exspecially the "Platinum Edition" in .009 or better .010 !

Very bright and very clear sound...really fantastic !

The very best strings I've ever used in over 15 years...and I tried many other brands but with those I'll play 'til the end of my life !

Try it - you will love them !

I use D'addario 009. Nickel wound, or nickel round wound.

So looking at the main Ernie Ball site got me wondering...

There are A LOT of different types of strings out there. What's the difference? How do they compare? Why would one choose one type over another? For example, Ernie Ball sells the following type of guitar string types:

- Nickel Wound
- Coated/Titanium
- Reinforced
- Pure Nickel
- Stainless Steel

Can someone give us some Guitar Strings 101?
