Hello everybody. I have been stalking these forums for about 2 weeks now and figured it was time to introduce myself. i just started learning to play and stumbled upon this site. I have Squier Affinity Strat I got for xmas and would appreciate any helful advice.

Welcome to the Forum. We are a friendly lot. Hope you stick around. There are a lot of useful videos on Youtube as far as re-stringing a guitar, lessons on playing, demos on different equipment. I recommend finding a good instructor, one that can take you under their wing. Learn all you can. Try to play with other people, people you like to be around. If you haven't had you guitar properly set up, I would take it to a guitar shop and have it properly set-up. Learn to change your own strings. Buy a tuner, any will work, but I like Boss products.

Most of all, have fun. Post pics of your guitar if you can as we all like pics.

my piece of advise is this: PRACTISE, PRACTISE, PRACTISE!, but DON'T neglect other aspects of your life...

make sure you are making space for improvisation and composition in both your lessons and practice routines.
another good idea is to record yourself when playing (not always, but sometimes). one can find mistakes he/she did not know he/she had while listening to his recordings.

learn to be expressive. practise vibrato a few minutes every day.
you will learn that there are some guitar players who think that playing at super speed makes them great guitar players. they are WRONG!
Ritchie Blackmore once said it was pretty easy to spend your time playing scales very fast, but that it was harder to slow down and just hold a note.

and if your are just a beginners, understand that this part of your learning procces is essential. it will tell you wether you wish to continue playing the guitar or not.
so, if you happen to feel things are not the way you expected or need any help, feel free to let US know! (kind of the aim of this forum, i think)

remember - your main tool is your ear. work it! listen to good music, of different genres.

and most important of all
HAVE FUN!

Thank you very much for the advice. I have a question, what should my practicing consist of as far as in what order should i be learning? I only have the dvd that came with the starter pack so Ive been just going with that.

hey,

well, first things first.
make sure you learn all the basic chords (at least major, minor and 7th chords). this part also includes barre chords. master them.
if you've reached this point - CONGRATULATIONS! you are now ready to play (Strum) lots of songs (the list is endless)

here's a list of some easy-to-play songs (don't know what music you like though)

you know, once my first guitar teacher told me that anyone can learn a few chords and play some song and awe his friends.
from where i come from (Argentina) almost everyone seems to know "how to play guitar", or at least they think, only because they can play -let's say- Knocking on Heaven's Door (no offence to the great and unique mr bob dylan, there's some cool harmony going on in that three-chord-progression).

so, let's start unleashing the cool guitar player that every band wants there is in you!

once you can play (strum) your favourite songs, i HIGHLY recommend learning some blues.
i'll give you reasons allright.
- blues' got some easy and cool rhythm for you to work on.
- this slow rhythm allows you to learn how to pick at real tempo
- blues' harmony is all about 7th chord progression (learn your twuelve bar progression, google it up, there lots of them)
- when learning blues, record yourself playing a 12bar and improvise on in. to do this you'll find useful the pentatonic scale. pentatonic scales are five note scales. they are easy to remember, and are used in many styles (rock, blues, heavy metal...).
- blues is not about playing many notes at high speed. blues is about FEELING music. that's why you need to hold notes for some time.
blues makes you play a simply but meaningful phrase, and stop... and play again (it's hard to explain, just hear some blues, and play).


check five positions on the guitar neck (patterns) for minor pentatonic! (red dot means root note... so if you play patter one on the fifth fret, you get 'a minor pentatonic scale')

pentatonics are a MUST for all guitarist. just look at the shape on your guitar neck. it's like guitar string tuning was based on pentatonics, because notes are so close to each other.

12 bars usually use E, A and D a lot (7th of course), and get the feeling of the rhythm! (sometimes wrongly written, because this is a swing feel)

i also recommend dave celentano's 'Essential Blues Guitar' book

hehe i forgot a few more reasons.

- blues will get you on learning and practising bends (or bendings? again, pardon my language), hammer on and pull offs, and some vibrato)

don't try to use all this at once... you will learn how to use all this with practice

Thank you very much for taking the time to write all that. I will definitley take your advice. I do mostly like hard rock and metal but at the same time I dont want to just be able to play fast. I want to play the correct notes and have them be clear. Once again thank you very much.

play this very slowly at first, and (very) gradually increase speed. it has to sound well. every time you play any drill, make sure it sounds well.
alternate picking means pick down, pick up, down, up....
this exercise may be boring, but it is also very useful. if done well, it can be very helpful in your technique.
i'm not joking! i wish i'd practised this exercise constantly when i started playing the guitar. now i do it everytime i pick my guitar. of course, there are variations of this exercise... but this is the easiest one.

I cant thank you guys enough for your advice and effort to help me. Im getting pretty (dexterios?) im able to move from string to string and fret to fret fairly easy, so im gona start these scale excersizes. once again thank you
