A+++ response. I agree with pretty much everything you wrote. I don't think you can find someone to say that the bullet is better than an american standard, but to compare a better squier ( like my vibe 60's) and blindfold someone, or recorded with it, I would imagine that many people would be hard pressed to think the squier wasn't a quality guitar

Thank you for the kind words. You actually bring up another good point here in regards to recording. We guitar players are a rather fussy breed to say the least...many of us spend years trying to perfect our tone and such and we all certainly know what we like and what we dislike. When it comes to recording however it's really a very different ball game and the truth of the matter is that most people can't even tell a Strat from a Les Paul, let alone a Squier Strat from a Fender once it's down on tape (hard disk, whatever). Heck...most people can't even tell the difference between analog and digital, let alone a tube amp vs. solid state once the studio engineer is done tinkering...some people think they can but once the blind fold goes on, they're lucky to get it right 50% of the time.

If you really want a fun experiment, record a few tracks and post them here and ask people to tell you what equipment you used to record those tracks. I actually did this sometime back in regards to SS vs. tube amp thread and not one single person was able to identify the amp I used on the recording...and this was on a forum full of seasoned musicians! Call me a snit but I really do enjoy rubbing people's noses in their own ignorance! LOL!!! The truth of the matter is that even with a live performance, I've NEVER...not even once...had a person walk up to me and say "yea...that sounded ok but you really should be using an American Standard (or Les Paul or a Marshall stack, whatever) instead". Most people either like they way you play or they don't. It's not really about the equipment you use as much as how you use the equipment...which leads me to my next point...

Another factor in the whole "blind taste test" really comes down to the musician who recorded/performed the track. For example, give a really good player something like a Squier Bullet and take a poor guitar player and give him a $2000 Custom Shop Strat and let them both record...with all other things being equal, most (if not all) the people who listen to the two tracks without knowing which is which will think that the Bullet sounds "better"...and it has NOTHING to do with the instruments at all, simply the person(s) playing them.

Last but not least, there was another factor about all of this that I forgot to mention in my rather lengthy post there and that's simply the nature of people in regards to their abilities. Ok...another photography analogy here but I run in to this all the time. Someone will go out and buy "a camera" and after a while they'll start to realize that...well...their pictures just suck. Instead of questioning their abilities and skill, the first thing most people will think is simply "I need a better camera" so they'll go out and buy something like maybe a low end DSLR...and their pictures still suck (and in some cases the pics will be even worse because the person has no clue how to use the better camera!). Of course you'll get some blow hard who thinks he's a "pro" that will tell this person that they need better, more expensive lenses (and it always amazes me how many "pros" can't really take decent pictures). Of course if the person is serious about photography sooner or later their technique does start to improve so they figure...well...it must have been that $1700 lens that did the trick and they'll tell others to do the same! LOL!!! I really think this same thing applies to a lot of guitar players as well...someone will go out and buy a cheap guitar and amp and then sit there and say, "gee...my sound sucks...I guess I need a better amp". Later they'll upgrade that $100 Squier Bullet to a better guitar...maybe a Mexican standard or something. Did it improve their tone? Yea...maybe a little but over the course of time they're playing has improved as well...and if they practice regularly, they're playing will usually continue to improve. By this point perhaps they've invested in something like an American Standard and a decent tube amp so in their mind they reason they sound good now must be the expensive equipment...doesn't have anything to do with the fact that they've been practicing for a couple of years now! LOL!!!!!!! Of course as I eluded to above, once a person gets to this point they feel the need to justify that extra money they paid for the expensive gear so hey...that cheap stuff really sucks and really is little more than junk, right? Oye!!!

Honestly what much of this comes down to is simply that a lot of people simply like to wallow in their own stupidity and then feel the need to justify or rationalize it to others. I've used Squiers on stage and now that I think about it, yea...I've used a Squier or two on a few recordings as well. Some people seem to think that they can't even show up at a practice with something as loathsome as a Squier...as far as I'm concerned, it's their loss :-). Squiers....Fenders...whatever...in the end it really just comes down to how well you can play.

Ok...just some more babbling for people's consideration :-)

Peace,
Jim

Jim,

You hit enough nails on the head to build a coffin for a few name brand snobs. I couldn't of said it better myself in less words.
