I put in my beginning guitar thread about the brain fart I had about leaving the colorform packing on the guitar.

I was wondering how to get the nobs off. I think some of the packing might have gotten stuck in them, and I would like to take the nobs off to pick it out.

Here's me on my guitar so you can see the three nobs on the front of the guitar. (now that I think about it, you can see the glare of the colorform film.LOL)

Get a shoelace, slide it under the knob, wrap it around once (the shoelace will come out at 3 and 9 o'clock). then pull both ends of the shoelace straight up in the air, then pull up on one side then the other (you will have to go back and forth a few times). The knob should pop right off.

Watch out for flying knobs though. I have had them shoot across the room.

Shoelaces work, or I just use a shirt, and the extra cloth can help keep them from flying...

Use a small tea spoon as a lever working with the bowl back onto the guitar top. Put a towel underneath though to avoid dents..

I do not recommend this as the spoon can also crack/break the knobs.

I don't recommend it because my mom would have killed me if I tried using one of her spoons to fix my guitar...For years I kept hearing how I destroyed a pair of her scissors cutting grip tape for one of my skateboards...

I use my polishing cloth to pull them off. Slip it under the knob, wrap it around, then gently pull up. The cloth even catches the knob.

I use a plastic bag from the grocery. the kind with the plastic stip handles on them. Put one strip under one side of the knob and another strip on the other side of the knob. Pull up and the knob will fly off. theytend to fly accross the room. Be careful your eyes.

I have found this method a good one along with the shoelace technique.
Although the polishing cloth does save it from sailing across the room, but if you are really slick you can nail somebody with it....j/k. :D

Well when or if the young lady who asked in the first place snaps a knob you can buy her another set......we are just trying to help.
Beside , it doesn't matter if it's a Squier. It's her guitar. :D :D

This is the best method. Slip the edge of the cloth or a t-shirt under the knob and wrap and twist it tight around the knob. Then pull straight up. This method exerts even but gentle pressure all around the knob to avoid the knob cracking.

It doesn't matter if it is a Fender, Squier, Epiphone, BC Rich, Daisy Rock, Washburn, Jackson, Gibson, or what ever brand...OP asked how to remove knobs. In her case it is just a matter of getting something underneath the knob without hurting the knob or pickguard. We are giving answers that we feel will not hurt her guitar.

You can go ahead and use screw drivers on your guitar though...if that is what you use.

i do use screwdrivers, and have never had any problem. plus i don't have a whole lot of shoe laces laying around i can use to pry on stuff. :\

i've used screwdrivers to take off the knobs on every guitar i've owned (i've had a lot of squiers, fenders, gibsons, epiphones, sx, blah blah). never broken a single one. i'd venture to guess it's quicker and easier than using a shoelace.

but hey, if you've got a toolbox full of shoelaces, knock yourself out.
