I'm new to the forums here - and new to guitars as well, and I'm enjoying learning to play my Affinity Strat.

Anyways, I bought a used Affinity Strat, and it has a weird serial number on it. I've read other serial number posts and the Squier Wiki, but my serial number doesn't follow the numbering system.

On the back of the headstock it reads, "Crafted in China" with a serial number of CY30612800. I'm thinking it might be 2003, or maybe March 06. I don't think Squier made guitars in China in 1993, and the serial number doesn't follow the numbering system for the nineties.

The guitar itself looks exactly like the one pictured here, http://www.squierguitars.com/pdf/curren ... ervice.pdf except mine has the rosewood fretboard - the headstock markings are the same, as is the body color. (BTW, is there a specific name for that color blue?)

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!

Ken

Hey Ken, Welcome to the forum.

They didn't start using "Crafted in China" until '96 (I guess they said Made in China before that) so both your guitars (and mine also) have to be post-1996. The CY serial number is: C=China, Y=Yako (Taiwan), which is the plant your guitar was assembled in. However that is supposed to be followed by a 2 digit year, which doesn't fit either of your guitars (mine is 00 which would be 2000). Also both guitars have 8 digit numbers which is correct.

I guess it could be like you suggested Ken and the first digit is the month of production and the next 2 is the year, but that would make Billy's guitar an '09 and he said it was definately older than '08, plus I've never seen it posted anywhere that they were dated this way.

Ken, I believe that color is officially listed as "Metallic Blue". Good luck in decoding your guitar's serial number, I'm sure someone else will be able to help you more than I did.

Bill
