I'm messing with my Humbucker on my squier strat to help get a good metal sound. I have it around 1/8 of an inch from the 22th pressed string on the bass side. My treble sides for my pickups are lowered cause they seem to be too high for my liking. Anyways, I'm finding that the 6th string overpowers the 5th and 4th sometimes by a tiny bit. So which one, lowering or raising the pickup, will get a clearer tone. Like i'm thinking that higher up, the 6th string will just get even louder, So is lower the way to go?

Yes, you will notice that on most guitars the bass side is lower than the treble. Probably because when you detune the bass string needs more room than the treble to slap around.

You can also adjust your amp to reduce bass or treble.

If you are looking for a metal sound then there are a lot of pedals and amps that can reproduce what you want. It's generally an overdriven amp with eq set to treble.

You will begin to notice the quality of a guitar pickup by it's ability to sound each note inspite of the distortion. Also there are distortion pickups but then you are stuck with that sound only.
