I have a nice sunburst bullet and a nice dauphine blue bullet. I like them but the tuners are not to good. I bought some fender schaler locking tuners to install on the blue bullet. The hole in the headstock is too small for the new tuners. I think the new units need a 10mm hole. I am reluctant to drill this myself without a press or drill guide. Anyone out there have any experience in upgrading squier tuners.

I also intend to replace the tremelo system. I found some all steel ones at guitar fetish. any one been down that road also?

any tips

Many thanks.

It is possible to do with a drill but be careful and use at your own risk. Most people here wont recommend you drill yourself fearing to split the headstock but I was able to do it. Just go gently, dont press hard on the drill and do not force the new ferules in.

For the tremolo, make sure you get a block that fits Squires dimensions.

Thanks, I am not goint to rush this. I think I will wait until I can get to my drill press. I will start witha bit just slightly larger than the existing hole and work my way up to the 10mm.

The Guitar Fetish trem blocs are "supposed" to fit. I will see when they arrive.

tThanks again

Yes, Squires measurements are sometimes inconsistent and it requires more work to make them fit.

Good luck.

I have installed 4 of the GFS steel tremolo blocks. One on a Squire Affinity which required about 1/4 inch be taken off the bottom of the block in order to fit the thinner Affinity body. This also required new holes to be drilled to allow the string ends to be recessed into the block bottom as well as increasing the depth of the tremolo spring holes. The blocks fit depth wise in the Squire Standards since they have thicker bodies. But on all the installations the side to side dimensions had to be increased by some slight sanding on the curved sections of the tremolo cut out. None of the installtions was just change the block. Good luck with your mods, just take your time.

As far as the holes go, use regular point drill bits (not bullet pilot bits) and run the drill backward. Drill a little from the top side, then a little from the bottom side. If you feel comfortable that you have a steady hand at that point, run it forward through the hole (FROM THE TOP SIDE TO THE BOTTOM). If you're still apprehensive, then run the bit backward all the way through. By running it backward, you shouldn't have any splits or chips in either face. The existing hole should guide it through pretty easily. Don't push too hard right off the bat, let the existing hole guide the bit. Do your best to drill at a 90% angle to the face and it should go right through.

It's discouraging to hear that that much milling and drilling is required on the GFS trem block to get a fit. Was it worth it in sound quality?

If not I will send them back.

I am re- thinking all this modification. Kind of thinking now just leave them be. They are what they are, and mostly that's what they will always be. I bought them for kick around guitars. Something I can drag around and practice on and not worry about dents, scratches etc. they temptation to make the better is always there. But I could save all that modification money and effort and buy a new MIM.

I'm working on upgrading a Bullet. Dimarzio pickup, Graph-tech saddles, Volume pot. It's a Bullet 20th Ann Special. Looking good so far..
