HI, anyone know how I can solve a weird problem I have? I purchased a classic vibe 50 tele. I really like this guitar, my first fender, been a Les Paul guy for more than 20 years and thought I'd try a fender.
THe problem with the tele is when I ploay my last three fingers brusk the pick guard near the high e string and it crackles through the amp. pretty loud and rather disturbing. I think it must be static electricity but can't seem to ground myself or the pick guard to stop this. I don't get through the pick up just the plastic pick guard. any thoughts? i was gong to try some static clig spray but haven't yet or may be clear nail polish but don't want to ruin anything . no ground switch on my mesa boogie amp, tryed different plugs and a different amp but still get the noise. help

Unfortunately this is a different type of guitar than you are used to playing. Gibsons/Epiphones have more of an arch on the body than say a Tele or Strat (pickups are higher on the body). It sounds more like a player issue than a guitar issue. I know when I buy new guitars I have to spend time with it to learn the nuances of that particular guitar.

On my Strats I had to learn to straighten my fingers (keep them away from the palm) a little more than I was used to to keep from brushing the pickguard. It could be the same for you and your Tele.

Congrats on you new guitar.

Welcome.

There are several remedies. Some work in certain situations, some don't as static electricity of itself has no place to go unless it is sporadically wiped away upon build up or there is a circuit created to continually drain it away. Leaving the circuit method for last, the following are the more simpler and popular, albeit less effective and not always permanent methods for dealing with static electricity on pickguards:

- Wipe the pickguard front and back with a fabric softener sheet and place the sheet underneath the pickguard when finished.

- Remove your pickguard and wash it with a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water, drying with a paper towel.

- Squirt the pickguard front and back with "Static Guard", drying with a paper towel.

An infinitely more dependable and usually permanent way is to create a draining circuit: Ensure that the back of the pickguard is shielded (foiled) and this shielding is in contact the rest of the guitar's ground circuit.

In EXTREME cases, changing to a different pickguard is necessary.

I'm going through a similar problem with our other guitar player's guitar. Tele's have a different way of string earthing. There's a wire that goes from the top of one of the volume pots, and it's just sandwiched between the guitar body and the bridge plate. I'm not a big fan of that way of grounding myself.

Not sure if that's your problem though. From what you're describing, you could have something going on with your bridge PU or it's connection. Also remember, you can get some copper tape to shield the pickguard and the cavities if you're worried about the shielding properties of the guitar.

I'm still not sure if any of this will help you. I'm starting to think my other guitar player just has a jankdified neck pickup. I've installed a new Duncan in the bridge, swapped the pots, switch, twisted the string earth for better bridge-plate connection, and still a nasty buzz. Freaking Tele's!! Why are they so moody?

Really?? I didn't know static could be a problem with guitars. Nice post man. I had no idea myself. Wow, you learn something new everyday on here. I do the copper shielding in all of my guitars, and it does seem to work really good. Not for the Tele I'm working on though. The stock neck PU just seems to be going south.

Yes, really!

Thank you.

Obviously, the neck pickup has a different malady unto itself. You may want to check that some of your shielding isn't flapping on and off the positive lead at the eyelet of that neck pickup.

Put one of those bounce dryer sheets under the pick guard.
