Hi everybody,

I just picked up a used Classic Vibe 50's Squire Strat in mint condition. I understand that they come stock with Alnico 3 (single coil) pickups and I'm trying to set the pickup height. Do I use the specs on the Fender site for standard or traditional pickups or something else? I know that some don't even use specs, but mess with them by ear...I just want a place to start from. Also, do I set all the pickups (neck/middle/bridge) the same height? The Fender site says 5/64 bass and 4/64 treble for standard single coil. If I set all the pickups this way, won't they be pretty equal in height? I thought they were suppose be somewhat staggered from the neck being the lowest to the bridge being the highest?

Please help! Thanks!!!

Welcome!

Start with say, two nickels thickness/distance between the pickup and string on the low E string fretted at the 12th fret. For the high E, one nickel's thickness/distance, fretting at the highest fret. After this, by all means, use your ear. Remember, NOTHING is, "in stone" when it comes to adjusting pickups. Just make sure the pickups aren't too close to the strings as you will get diminished sustain and all sorts of whacky double tones.
