It's been a while since I have seen them in a guitar shop, but yes Squier made them. I do not know why Squier did it, other than to tap into the SG market. I remember seeing them in the mid to late 90's. The SN should tell you the year that one was made. Here is another Gibson-isque guitar by Squier:

Actually, I think they are Guild clones.
Guild had SG-likes (KIm Thayl of Soundgarden played a S-100 one).
There also was a Squier Starfire, after the Guild Starfires (ES-335 type) were discontinued.
