Just received a new Squier Bullet from my buddy with a Cube 30 amp. Which steps should I take in learning how to play, Private lessons or DIY? He told me to get a tuner if there are any suggestions for that too......THANKS....Wes

The tuner will help you. In my opinion you should take lessons to get yourself started. Once you feel ready, then go off on your own. Until you start lessons, buy a chord chart, and a beginner's book. Nothing extravagant, just somehting to get you going for now. Most of all have fun. Welcome to the Forum.

If you can afford lessons and there are decent teachers around, I say go for that option, cause if you're starting out, I think it helps to have someone to interact with face to face...I mean there are a lot of nice books and other resources, but I think its better to have that human interaction that no book, DVD, or forum can match. That being said, DIY is not too hard these days with the internet and forums, as these are good resources...but I find at times it may be confusing to beginners as the number of sources and people offering advice may lead to a "too many cooks in the kitchen" situation which can at times be just as frustrating, if not more frustrating, than not enough cooks in the kitchen...

Also, a book or DVD won't say "No, you are doing it wrong" or "get that thumb down". To me it is especially critical to learn proper technique, which will make you a better player down the line. When starting out, a teacher is critical for this...
