The first thing I would do is go online and order catalog #120 from Stewart-MacDonald. I just got it. It has a basic list of steps on page 39 along with Nitro finishes. If you plan on applying a stain use a pre-conditioner first. If your using paint I would recommend a sanding sealer then a final sanding so the grain doesn't raise when you apply the paint. Get a pack of 500-1000-1500 grit wet-dry sand paper, tack rags, etc before you start. Work in a well ventilated space. Lacquers stink to high heaven as well as being highly flammable (no bogarting a smoke unless you like the no eyebrow look) Take your time. plan on many coats of clear I laid down two before light sanding the first time. I used a stain and didn't want to into it sanding. If you use a poly they go on much thicker and reduce the the number of coats by half or more Good luck and remember to do a few test pieces of wood to make sure it's the color/texture/grain you want 8)

Be careful that you use the same kind of paint as the clearcoat on top. There's a Paintyourguitar website that sells the instructions that are highly detailed. I bought it and will use his method (nothing fancy but well researched and clearly described, w/pictures!), but he does make a big point about not mixing the kind of paint you use with the wrong top clear seal. For instance, don't use enamel (really at all, he says) and then poly on top. If you use a polyurethane on top, user a poly paint as well. He recommends using spray Rust-Oleum (Painters' Touch) paint and use a spray Rust-Oleum clearcoat, that way you're getting a factory mix. Using different manufacturers might give you two different chemical compounds and a bad paint job. He also cautions against Krylon brand because of recent quality control issues. If you use lacquer paints or enamel you have to wait until the paint has hardened (different than dried) for a couple of months before the clearcoat. Otherwise the top coat will seal a soft surface that will never harden and just leaning it against a chair can dent the paint. The ebook is really better than my explanation. I might use urethane car paint - more expensive but more color choices and faster hardening. Good luck with you paint job.

I repainted a Marlin strat using primer and spray paint from a local car parts store and sealed it with clear lacquer from the same place. It's dead easy.
The annoying part is using wet and dry paper to get a really nice glassy finish. Took me AGES!

I found a forum on refinishing guitars. The forum is hosted by a company that makes a product.... but I didn't really look at the stuff so I don't know exactly what the product is or does. The address is reranch.com, then look for the forum link. It seemed like a fairly busy forum. I just checked and the webpage looks kinda like a newsletter and in the right column their is an active link that says guitar refinishing.com.
