I have just bought tele from a 'friend' and I think it might be a fake. It has Made in Korea on the headstock. Serial number M and then seven digits, starting with a 2. It has the Squire logo, then in small letters Telecaster and under it 'by Fender'

I'll try to post pictures if that helps.

Why would anyone fake a squier tele? They don't sell for that much!

The reason I am asking in the first place, is that the action is way high. If it is not a fake, it would be worth fixing . If not, Ebay here it comes!

Pics would help as Squiers have been or are currently made in several places, like Mexico, Japan, Korea, China, Indonesia, and India. Do a search on this forum as there is some info on how to figure out what country and/or year the guitar was made through the serial number. However, it doesn't sound fake to me, as long as Squier is spelled S-Q-U-I-E-R, its probably not fake, as some do say "by Fender" on the headstock.

What makes you think its a fake? Because it just sounds like a typical Squier to me from your description.

I just can't imagine a $100 - 150 guitar being counterfited. Why would someone waste the time when you could do a custom shop model.

Every Squire I've ever played in a shop has had a ridiculously high action. It's probably just never been properly set up.

As others have said, "why fake a Squire". They're just not worth that much unless its a "Made in Japan" from the 80's. They're worth quite a bit.

I have to agree with the general consensus here in that it's probably NOT a fake...there's really not much point to it. Usually where you see fakes start creeping up is with the MIM Fender Strats and the top of the line models (and/or vintage instruments). Some folks will buy a $150 Squier (or Chinese copy), change the headstock logo and then sell it for $400 as an MIM or something, etc..

BTW, the setup of a guitar, used or otherwise is absolutely no indication of whether or not it's a "fake". Even in the case of a brand new instrument you have to remember that with these inexpensive imports, while they may have indeed been setup at the factory, most of the instruments have been sitting in warehouses, then shipped over seas (by various methods), possibly sat in another warehouse, shipped again to a store and then put out on the sales floor. Even a top of the line $4000 instrument will NOT hold it's setup under that kind of abuse. It's also worth mentioning that most of your larger music stores such as Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc., do NOT do setups on these instruments before they put them on display! Now a days many of them don't even check the high end instruments let alone the $100 - $200 models. Most of the time and especially with newbies, they'd rather you come back so they can suck another $40 out of your wallet since these inexpensive instruments have a rather low profit margin.

In this case if you throw in the fact that the instrument was obtained used from "a friend" (and god only knows what he/she may have done to it), then I would be highly surprised if it was playable at all. Has nothing to do with the quality or brand of the instrument. Just one of those lovely little facts of life.

If your criteria for deciding whether a guitar is "geniune" or not is based on it's setup, then at the risk of sounding rude, you have A LOT to learn about guitars my friend! LOL!!! Leave your paranoia on the shelf, get a decent setup and then just play that sucker :-)

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim
