I am moving toward picking up a Squier Strat, and getting back to playing after over 30 years. I have had the itch for a while. However, I am a lefty. Because I haven't played in so long, I saw these Squier Strat Packs advertized, thought they would be a good setup to start with, and I could always mod the Squier later when my fingers know what they are doing again :D .

Well, Fender Customer Service tells me they do not offer that for lefties, and have no plans to do so at this time (discriminatory! ).

Anyway, there is a lefty Squire Affinity out there, advertised for $179.99. The only color that seems to be offered to us southpaws is two tone sunburst, which I can live with, although I really like some of the other colors offered to you righties better!

So I figure I will put my own 'strat pack' together, but need some advice on a decent low cost practice amp to pair it with. GC is offering what appears to be their own pack, paired with the Fender Frontman 10g Amp for $250. They are also selling a Line 9 Amp for $68, which I could separately pair with the $179.99 stand-alone lefty. Same total price, two different amps.
Once I get whatever I end up with, I also plan on changing out the strings and putting Ernie Balls in, as I read over and over that the factory supplied strings are crappy..Make sense?

Any suggestions, or other ideas?
Thanks!

Hi databrat, and welcome to the forum. Although I don't play lefthanded, I assembled my own Strat pack as well. I went with the Squier Standard Stratocaster and the Roland Micro Cube amp. I spent a total of $325 about a year and half ago, and I'm still very happy with the set-up.

I find that the Micro Cube amp has plenty of settings to keep me happy. I highly recommend it. For what it's worth, I recommend you buy the most expensive guitar you can afford. If you're getting a Squier, go for the Deluxe or Classic Vibe series. I hope this helps! 8)

Its not necessarily that the factory strings are crappy, as most Squiers are strung with Fender strings at the factory, but more that you don't know how long the strings have been on the guitar before you bought it...thats why I change the strings on any new guitar I get, because you don't know how long they've been on there...and if you buy it at a store where it might be on a sales floor, you definitely want to change strings after buying because there's a good chance someone that someone decided to try a guitar on lunch break after eating some buffalo wings and not wiping their hands off really well or something....

I understand finding lefthanded guitars can be difficult....This place has a large selection of decently priced, left hand guitars, though they sometimes need a good set-up out of the box, and they don't have the Fender-shaped headstocks. I am not left-handed, but own several of the righties, good stuff:

Yeah, I saw that Roland out there too. My total pricepoint is gonne be about the $250 mark that I mentioned, so I'll keepo my eye out for whatever deals I can cobble together.

And I really wish that Fender offered more than onecolor fro lefties. Yours is one of hte ones I really like.

Bowlfreshener,
Thanks for the Rondo referral! Looks like I can get myself set up for a good price. Not a Fender tho...but I guess beggars can't be choosers. these guitars have gotten some really favorable reviews on many websites I just visited.
thanks again!

databrat,

Total price for this package is $293.94, take a look. Not a bad set-up and should get you on the right foot.

Today I found this:

or

Black or Sunburst seems to be the only options. I still think you would like the Roland Cube 15X better.

do yourself a favor and get yourself a decent amp.It may cost a few bucks more to start with, but playing thru a lousy sounding amp takes all the joy out of making music (and wild divebomb-y squeally noises etc.) the micro cube is a good starter and sounds pretty ok but I'd avoid the frontman 10 like the plague if i was you I snagged one of them at a garage sale awhile back for pocket change and it has got to be the second worst amp i've ever had the misfortune of plugging into (with the Line6 spiderII 60 or 80 watt being the all time un-champ) ..just my 2 cents worth,,good luck

Thanks for the great advice all! Yeah, Sweetsoulx, I agree. When I did play many years ago, I had a crappy guitar strat knockoff, but a great VOX amp, and it made even my crappy guitar sound good! I'm leaning towards the cube, and for cost savings probably towards either an SX from Rondo or a Squier Affinity. Rondo has a much bigger selection of southpaw guitars, tho...

An SX will get me started, and I can always change out the pups and pots later..

Bro.. No offense, but the Fender 85 would kick the holy hell out of the micro-cube and the Spyder without even breaking a bead of sweat. You might want to consider snagging one yourself to see what I'm talking about.

The frontman 10 was mentioned as a choice for the "Do - it -Yourself Squier Strat pack"....the 85 is hardly a practice amp....Yeah,the 85 would kick the hell out of a micro cube...but that is not really a fair fight now is it? Besides that why would I want to snag one? I already have an Fm212r that would rip the 85's face clean off?
As a starter/practice amp a micro cube makes a good choice - its not overly expensive, its small,it doesn't push much air so it won't p*ss off the neighbours too much...it has a few diffrent sounds and effects to dick around with, and it sounds pretty good.

Hey guys!
I didn't mean to start a debate here...just looking for some advice. As I said, I will probably start slow. After all, it has been 30+ years, and it will take some time to get the ol' chops back! I can start with what I said (SX Strat, Roland Cube), and If I am satisfied with my progress, and if I haven'd driven the wife insane  , I can mod it, and get a better amp...

At the beginning, tho, I gotta keep the costs as low as I can.

hey,you had good luck with a vox in the past..i believe they make a small amp like the microcube as well..i vaguely remember trying on out on a hungover saturday afternoon...i think..
Friends of mine skip the amp part completely and plug into their computers to practice and play as well.there's some pretty sweet simulation software out there......not my cup of tea,but hey, another idea to float for ya..

Hahaha.. Never heard anyone defend a FM over anything before. Maybe the Marshall MG-50 people could chime in on this as well. Thanks for that. Too funny.
