i recently bought an affinity strat HSS with the g-dec jr. amp. it's my first electric guitar. first thing i noticed when removing it from the package is that the amp came with an instruction manual, but the guitar did not. there are no instructions for the guitar, but it did come with a few allen wrenches and a tension spring.

of course, i have absolutely no idea what i'm supposed to do with these tools! i figured there would be a book with simple instructions such as how to string the guitar (if necessary, i assume that's what the tools are for) and a beginner's guide on how to tune the guitar.

is my set just missing the instruction book? is there an online guide to download? i have browsed a couple of manuals on this site but haven't found what i'm looking for...

so i called the guitar center where i purchased the guitar, and apparently this combo of guitar does not come with ANY instructions? i'm baffled, and frankly, a little dissatisfied. how can a guitar that comes in a box that has "start playing!" written all over it not come with any sort of instructions on how to start playing?

fortunately for me, i know how to tune a guitar well enough. what if i didn't? apparently the lower level packages come with an instructional DVD, but the HSS/G-dec Jr. doesn't? isn't mine the most expensive package you can buy? how come i get gyped out of a DVD?

i've been reading that you should change the strings every few months. how do you do that? i have no idea. what do all these screws and knobs do?

i mean seriously, i like the guitar, but now i am kind of insulted and thinking about returning it. i probably WON'T, but i'm really not satisfied with this (relatively) expensive guitar not coming with ANY sort of instructions on how it works.

on a related note, i am getting a LOT of buzzing out of the 6 string. i have no idea why, or if it's normal. does anyone who knows anything about guitars have any advice? i don't have any instructions, sooo i don't know what to expect or how to adjust it if there is something wrong...

I had the same thing happen to me.I took the guitar back to Guitar Center and they changed the strings(Ernie Ball Hybrid slinky $5.49) and did a compleat set up for me at no cost. The add also had a Fender tuner as part of the package but was not in my set. They also could see that this was part of the add and gave me a nice tuner. The one on the G-DEC JR. just does not work well enough. As far as a manual for the guitar,Fender should produce a basic manual to go with this "Stop Dreaming Start Playing" set.I did go on YOUTUBE and found several videos to help me with the mechanic's of the Affinity HSS Strat. Also read as many of the reviews you can on this guitar to help you out with some of the idiosyncrasy's common with this guitar. This will save you from some the things that other's have found that were not quite right out of the box with this guitar.Over all, I am very happy with the guitar and the G-DEC JR. amp.Now Fender needs to take this info and apply it to good customer service and up grade this package from what we,the customer have told them.I will perchase a Squire Telecaster next.

awesome; i will probably call GC sometime later this week to see what they recommend about "tuning" the entire guitar to factory spec. i played it after i got home and the buzzing is in all of the strings, not just the 5 and 6, and it only happens when they are fretted. at the 12th fret, all of the strings buzz with the exception of the high E...

it's just uhhh frustrating? i think i can understand their reasoning for not including any sort of instructions, but c'mon. i'm also into photography and camera gear. every camera lens is exactly the same, but they even come with an instruction book saying "this is the zoom ring, this is the focus ring, this is the AF on/off switch...."

i've seen videos on youtube although some of them are helpful, i find that a lot of them are very unprofessional. some kid in his bedroom, or you will find a video that looks professionally made, except the woman drops her pick 3 times and has to stop to pick it up or she doesn't know terminology like "oscillation" ("listen for the... you know, it's kind of sounds like... waves? you know like wuwuwuwuwuwuw... so listen for the wuwuwuwwu" really? remind me not to visit YOUR guitar website, lady...)

i did see on GC.com they have my package with a tuner in the pic, but it wasn't listed in the "items included" so i figured i was out of luck there, but i will ask.

Try to get to your GC before your 30 day's from perchase are up.This will be in your favor. Also pick up a copy of "The Guitar Hand Book" By Ralph Denyer(has excellent chapter on maintenance and customizing) while you are getting you guitar set up.Just get the book and you will see that this will help you as far as an "Operators Manual".It's not the only book out there, but it is a great book to start with...

wow, quite a serious problem you've got there. okay, first, what i think you need to do is to change/replace all the the strings. this should handle the buzzing thingy on your guitar. another thing which i suspect why it buzzes is because of the humbucker pickup. the humbucker catches more vibration from the strings rather than the single coil pickups. even a tiny vibration from the body can produce quite a loud noise (or shuold i say sound).

next, just leave the allen keys that had been provided to you. don't even try to do anything about it with your guitar. guitars which came straight from the factory had already been tuned and adjusted by professional supervisors. the big allen key is for tuning or adjusting the tension of the neck, whereas the tiny key is for adjusting the intonation at the bridge.

first, i called GC yesterday and the guy straight out just told me to bring my guitar in and they'd "tune" it. he said it sounded like the neck needed to be adjusted. i asked if there was a charge for it, and he almost cut me off halfway through the sentance and told me to bring it in and they'd take care of it, no charge. props to guitar center. glad i avoided the temptation of picking one up at best buy just for reward zone points.

second, the "buzzing" is a mechanical property of the strings, so it's not related to the pickups. the strings buzz when the guitar is unplugged.

third, i've been to that squier support page, i have all the related .pdf files saved on my PC but they are kind of worthless. the most helpful manual i've found is the generic fender manual for guitars and basses which i think i found on fender.com? maybe i did find it on squier's site...

still you know, if they could print that out and ship it along with a MSRP $349.99 guitar that would have saved me so much frustration! i've been driving for ~10 years and even a car comes with an in-depth manual on how to service the vehicle, even though most people pay a shop to take care of it...

anyway thanks for the bits of advice. when i wrote that angry rant i fully expected to get a bunch of angry responses calling me out!!!

I would like to think that's what Fender had in mind for this forum.A place where a person can get good info, advice, help, and comaradity with people with "our same interest" and love for a company like Fender Guitars. So this forum has worked like it was intended to do...
