in my humble opinion, upgrading an affinity is very satisfactory. try the HH configuration, you'll see why most of the professionals here loved Squier so much 8)

Listen mate no one here seems to say whether or not they ACTUALLY have performed and upgrade themselves so really their opinions are really without foundation, because you cant say what you havent done yet right! so if you try the upgrade paths and and it works for you then great! at least you can tell people how it went win or lose and most important you have everything to wind it back if it goes flatline!

Update!

I have poured cash into my Squire equivalent to the cash for a new Squire / MIM strat because its neck was lost to a stripped truss nut and it was showing early signs of fret wear.

Why would you throw money at such an old guitar that was MIC well thats because its my first Guitar and I am so attached to it, when I play I can pull some real cool tones from it

I am also so used to it and its coming with me on the journey .. all da way!

its also got 2 x 250k's and the necks a 500k pot so its unique to me and an original all fender instrument. if you gotta spend then do it for the love of your playing friend, improving or devaluing shouldnt be the a deciding factor here, and dont listen to the brand snobs who try to tell you your squire isnt a fender thay just dont know what their talking about .. PERIOD

its been a good experience taking my strat apart and putting it together again you learn so much by doing it, the local git shop can charge a fortune for a basic setup and Im no rich guy with a rich dad, I just mow the neihbours lawns

Have a go man!

My 2002 Affinity Strat has only the following items stock-neck,body,and tremolo assembly. She has Grover tuners,Fender 57/62 pickups,3 ply pickguard,250K pots(all 3), new 5 way switch, and aged pup covers as well as V/T/T aged knobs. Besides the $100 I paid for this Strat used all the other stuff cost me around $250.

I think the type of wood used depends on when the affinity was built. mine was built with alder and now the use agathis.

upgrading is your call, i'm about to drop alot of cash into mine even though some sticker fans on here think it's a waste of money.

if you like it, put in the time to research what your doing, affinity strats have a wider neck pocket and thinner body profile, but you can look into a bridge from supervee, or just buy the sustain block from them. that's where alot of the tone problems come from, my friend dropped a new bridge with a shorter block to fit an affinity in his and it made a huge different in the sustain.

i know alot of people say buy a MIM over upgrading a strat, but just think if you drop some notes into YOUR guitar, it becomes YOURS.

When i'm done with mine, NOBODY will have one just like it, and if they want to have one like it, they'll have to go the route I've chosen.
