Ello all,
I'm about to receive a 1999 Affinity Strat. Any opinions on these? I am only buying it to mess around with and learn about setting up.

Here it is http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0359952798

What do you think of this particular model? Are they better than the current models?

Cheers

Phil

Thing is I already have won this one. I'm going to use it to take round to friends houses and such so my main guitars don't get knocked about. It's just a jammin guitar.

Someone told me that the 80's models are the best but the 90's models are better than the current ones.

Any thoughts on this particular one? The guy is local to me and has a good rep for doing amazing set-ups on cheap guitars.

It will be a great model to tearn how to do set-ups and intonations on. Are they better than current models? No, the Classic Vibe is definately the best guitar Squire has put out. The Vintage Modified would be 2nd. (my opinion)

Once you have a good set-up and intonation on this guitar it will be a decent playing guitar. You may even want to modify the pickups and pots to get it to be a good giging guitar. Again a great guitar to learn to do this on as well.

Looks nice and congrats on winning the bid. Hope it increases your over-all guitar knowledge.

Yea, it can be good to learn setups on. But I tend to think that in a lot of cases it's the neck you need to worry about when it comes to Affinity Squiers. There are a lot of them where the frets stick out of the sides and don't feel good to the hands. I had to file my other guitar player's frets down on the sides (not the tops) so it wouldn't cut into his hand.

Personally, I think the Squier Stagemaster neck-through guitars are the best guitars Squier ever made. But that's just my opinion. It's hard to beat a 24-fret neck-through design. It's the most comfortable feel of a Squier neck that I've run across. Not to mention the guitar as a whole is rock solid. Nice weight to them, great sustaining guitar. Just needed new pickups, the stock one's that came with them are a bit harsh. Subjective argument, but I'd feel confident in putting a Stagemaster in an argument to be somewhere in the top of the food chain of best all-time Squiers.

I think the Master Series of a few years ago rates right up near the top. I have an M80 - set mahagony neck, two "duncan designed" humbuckers - designed by Todd Krause of the custom shop. Great instrument.

I have a 2000 Squier Affinity Strat that I play quite a bit. I really like the neck too. My guitar has had a few set ups over the years and I've also replaced the pickups. Putting Texas Specials in made it at least sound as good as a Fender. The fret job on it was originally terrible, but my guitar tech filed them so they don't hurt as much. To be perfectly honest, the fret job, even after being filed, is no where near the quality on my MIM Fender. But at least it doesn't cut me.

I recently stripped out the tremolo, and finding a replacement has been a pain in the butt. The body of a Squier Affinity series guitar is much thinner than on a normal Standard Strat, which means that a tremolo block used on basically any other guitar won't fit. Keep that in mind if you consider modding it.

Yea man, come to think of it, Squier seems to do really well when they stray from the norm. I often catch myself saying " I wish they would bring that series back" ( speaking of a few of the off the wall series) I agree with you on the MS and M80. But then again, if they did do that, the ones already owned wouldn't seem as special to me.

Ran across this one on ebay..

If I had $250, this sucker would be mine. If it had an ebony fretboard, I'd give it a 9. Gotta keep the blackness correct, so I give it a 8 for looks. Nice way to represent a unique look and stay with a standard Squier setup. If it plays as good as it looks, this would be awesome to have.

That is a nice one. I am considering buying a black pickguard for my purple Squier Standard. I think it will make a big difference.
