No they are the same size. I have owned two CV 50s and one CV 60s and the headstocks were all the same size[/quote]

Really? As I said, without actually measuring they appear different sizes but thanks for the clarification. I thought the pre-CBS headstocks were smaller.

I know the 70's-style headstock on my HWY 1 is way bigger than the headstock on my CV 60. I assumed the bigger headstock was not introduced until the 70's.

thats a common misconception, the bigger CBS headstock was actually introduced in late 1965/ 66. Its usually referred to as the 70s headstock b/c it was used all through out the 70s and it didn't become small again until around 1982-83. CBS took over the company in late 63 I believe. 64s. 65s and 66s all have the transition logo, and the late 65 and 66s have the larger headstocks. The CV 60s is modeled after a '62 Strat, which is still Pre-CbS

Ok, I have a "70's style headstock" (which was introduced in the mid to late 60's) on my HWY 1 and it is definately bigger than the headstock of my CV 60 (moddeled after a pre-CBS 60's Stratocaster).

I'd go for a CV50s, but they're both great guitars.

Played one yesterday alongside a 50s Classic Player at twice the price. The CP did just have the edge but it was very close. If I was in the market for another Strat I'd be hard pushed to make the choice, probably come down to whether I wanted the S or the F word on my headstock..

As for the pickguard, remember the CV stands for Classic Vibe (an overall vibe rather than being based on a particular model).. and that means a single ply scratchplate as others here have also said. I prefer 3 ply too, but it wouldn't be a deal breaker (and you could put a different one at a later date).

I love the 2 colour sunburst - nothing wrong with the extra red line on a 3 colour burst, just prefer 2. So, another reason for choosing the CV50

Let's not forget that pick guards can be replaced, if you do not like single ply. I know the Classic Vibe 60 has 11 hole mounts just like the Highway 1. In fact I used my old HWY 1 pickguard on it.

Actually, if my knowledge serves me right, CBS actually bought Fender in early 1965 (January 3, I think). But maybe they still had control over Fender somehow but actualy didn't purchase the company until 1965.

By the way, what's the difference between the logos? Did the CBS logo lose the blonde spaghetti-style and replaced it with black script and large 'Stratocaster' writing? And since CBS wanted to cut costs, why would they make the headstock larger? Wouldn't that just use more wood?

CBS increased the Headstock size so that the Logo could be seen better on TV and such for advertisement purposes supposedly. They didn't necessarily won't to cut costs, but to increase profits.

and you are right about it being 65
