I had some extra money to spend on a guitar, and went to the musical store totally conviced to buy a Squier Strat as a backup instrument for my Fender 50th. Anniversary Standard Strat.
I tried a couple of models, the Standard (too thin sounding, cheap looks), the Vintage modified (too light weighted for my taste), and the "Clasic Vibe" (very nice, cool instrument, but a little bit away from the money in my pocket).
While I was playing different instruments, a Tele catched my attention.
It looks ugly, like a chubby girl (Ugly Betty...hahaha), but cool at the same time, with P-90 soapbar pickups, baby poopoo yellow color, and a wierd "Dali-melted clock-like" pickguard.
Don´t know why, but it makes me smile.
Before I decided to go away from the store (didn´t liked most of the guitars, or not have the money for the expensive ones), I decided to play that instrument, just for curiosity.
Big WOW!!
It feels comfortable as an old shoe, the neck plays easy as butter, and the sound...well, just heavenly!
I played a guitar with P-90 some years ago, and liked the tone, but this time I felt in love with those pups!
They have the best of both worlds, single coil, and humbucker, I think.
Very cool clean tones, but no sharp as the single, fat and creamy but no muddy as the humbuckers!
Just in the middle!
Smooth, clean but not harsh, fat...well, just amazing!
It was a cheap guitar, nobody wanted to buy it, may be because the soapbars are a little bit underestimated and known pickups, may be the poopoo color...don´t know!
I´m so happy with my fat lady...plays strong and softly at the same time!
The worst thing was when I came home, and compared side by side the acoustic sound of my cheapo new Tele, and the 50th Anniversary Strat.
Oh noooo...!!! The Tele has a better resonance sound, unplugged...no no nooo!!! All those dollars wasted with an anniversary instrument...and a cheap instrument made in Indonesia sounds better!
But wait...the story hasn´t an end yet...the Tele fretboard has a better job, and my Strat have more string buzz when I bend the strings!

Anyway...congratulations to those guys in Indonesia, they are doing a grat job, with those cheap, but excellent instruments!
I´m very pelased and happy with that.

But just an advice on Squier company (I don´t think they will listen or care about my opinion, but anyway I give it): more color options!!!
Just that! I will love to see the Tele Custom in another colors, like the gorgeous Daphne Blue, or Cherry Sunburst!!

I have to agree that they made a poor choice of color options Black is ok ( ho-hum) but that blonde is one of those colors that only a mother could love. But then again it does kinda grow on you in kinky kinda way. I hope they keep making it. just more color options for a very fine guitar.

I agree, it´s a very good guitar, I´m thinking to buy another one, or may be a couple, because I was searching and there isn´t a direct substitute to it.
May be the Fender Telecaster 72 Deluxe is similar, but I have to change the pickguard and pickups to put a pair of soapbars on it.

I have to say that the Pictures I take doesn´t make justice to the real beauty of the finish!

I ordered that guitar about 2-3 years ago. I screwed up and ordered "Blonde" thinking it was the fretboard (maple). That has become my favorite guitar and the one I go to daily. I have not changed a single thing and have no plans to (except strings of course). I would love to try the Fender version but the Squier in my opinion is a sure fire winner just as it is.

I've had my eye on the Custom (with humbuckers instead of P-90s). I wish it came in a color other than black.

Congrats on finding a guitar you connect with! 8)

I agree with you, is the first guitar I don´t feel the urgency to "customize" it.
It´s beatifull and a very good workhorse!
I did a joke about the finish, but I like it, when I saw at the store looked so retro, so vintage!
I want to try the Fender version (Classic player Telecaster), but I prefer the Tele headstock over the big 70´strato. And I don´t like the colors...a very common transparent red, and black.
If the Squier Tele has good materials, it´s a guitar for years of use!

Yes, I think that is a problem with Squier, they have just a few color options for each guitar model.
What I found funny, is the Bullet series...it´s a very cheap guitar, but it has so many color options!
I will love to see those Tele´s with daphne blue, or surf green, or may be a couple of sunburst options...not just plain BLACK!!

I think the lack of color choices for the Squier Custom Teles is because the Fender model that its based off of only comes in one or 2 colors...

I have one of the Custom II models in the vintage blond and and I love it. I'm not much of what you'd call a real guitar player but I enjoy entertaining myself by playing what my limited, very limited, skill permits. The enjoyment is ramped up considerably whenever I plug this guitar into the amp and commence. It's a great guitar and seriously under rated and under appreciated.

Hey byarbor. Playing guitar is like sex: You don't have to be good at it to enjoy it. :)

I'm not very good by any stretch of the imagination, but I love it. Have fun! 8)

RussianRaceHorse...that is probably the most sensible (seriously) advice I have ever received as regards my guitar playing or attempted guitar playing. Seriously that gives me a perspective that I need to keep in mind. Thanks.

By the way I also have the Squier Tele Custom with the humbuckers, the one that only comes in black. I also have a Squier Affinity Butterscotch Blond Tele and I just purchased a Squier Tele Thinline. I love all of the Squiers I have including the Strats and the 51. They are really nice guitars.

Thanks again for the advice.
