hey there. i am looking into stripping the finish on my '93 standard. I dont really want to 'relic' it with a bunch of dings, dents, scratches, etc. i just really like the look of an older guitar. i played a road worn series the other day and loved the feel of the body. it looked to me like they used either no finish at all or a very light matte finish.
would a regular paint stripping solvent be the best to remove part or all of the finish? again, i dont really want to take pain off.

The urethane clear finish is much tougher than the paint. If you use a stripper it may come off with the clear coat. You might be able to dilute the stripper and do it in multiple steps. If you use it full strength do not allow it to stay on very long and use steel wool instead of scraping with a scraper. I would do the back first working from the middle out . small areas at a time. you will want to put a new finish on it maybe a matte or satin laquer sprayed on in thin coats Nitrocellulose is available online or possibly special order at a local paint supplier. I have one checking for me right now. I need to check back with him. You can always sand it but it will be time consuming too. Good Luck. The worst thing about a project like this is the amount of time your out of a guitar The best thing is it's a good time to do other upgrades :D

If you're going to use a chemical stripper I suggest this one. It's much safer to use on wood than other strippers.
