Hello all,

Was wondering if anyone had any advice to keep the Squire in tune a little longer. I am new to the guitar game and my playing level is increasing, I do not use the whammy bar but do some string bending. It seems with a few bends it can pull it out of tune. I am wondering if there is an inexpensive fix for this as I plan to keep the Squire as my main tool during my learning and down the road upgrade to a better model.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Hello. i have all your answers. i'll tell you how to fix a strat,

-there is a plastic plate on the back of your guitar. take it off.
- you will see 2/3 springs (depending on model) atached to a plate thing that is screwed into your guitar body. it also has a wire attached to it.

- go into your local guitar shop and ask for "Strat bridge springs". buy 2 springs if yor guitar has 3 already or if it has 2 then buy three.

- attach these springs so you have 5.
-screw the plate in as far as possible (without damaging anything L.O.L)
if your intonation is out, take it to an expert to set up. this is a fidely job and takes hours of patience.
if its a telle ill come back soon.

Sometimes it goes out of tune from the strings binding at the nut. Another thing you can try is loosen up your strings a bit, then at the nut, take a pencil and "write" in the tiny slots where your strings pass through, this will help make sure the strings aren't binding or being held up at the nut after using the whammy bar or bending, as this can cause you to go out of tune as well.

If you are still using #9 strings then 5 springs and screwing you claw screws in all the way is a bit drastic. Fact is, your stings may be going out of tune when you bend because you have not stretched them after you put new strings on.

Another thing may be the way your are winding your stings on your tuning machines.

Since you're new to the guitar thing, may I suggest to you the purchase of "Guitar Players Repair Guide 2nd Edition". The best money you will spend on learning how to take care of your guitars to include how to install strings on your guitar so it does not go out of tune.

I have 4 Squier strats, 3 standards and an affinity. All have 3 springs on them, none have grafite on the nuts and all stay in tune when I play notes by string bending. When making adjustment to your guitar, take small steps, especially with things like your truss rod where adjustments may not have their full effect for several days.

Enjoy the guitar.

ya theres a few ways i can help. first take your strings off if you know how to put them back on correctly and get a pencil and put some lead in the little groves on the bridge and the upper bridge.(that also helps keep the strings from breaking) second, try not to bend so hard.

The others have covered stretching the strings. This is extremely important. I pull mine like bowstrings over the full length after I put them on. Also, make sure that you don't overlap when winding them on the tuners!

I also use reinforced plain strings. If you're handy w/ a soldering iron, tin the windings at the ball-end before putting them on, like I do. GHS offers a set w/ nylon wrap over the windings. These work well, but just try finding them in stock. They used to be marketed as a Kahler set, which is why I'm familiar w/ them. I have a Kahler on my '51 and it will snap ordinary strings on the first bend or tremolo pull-up.

A little more on trem springs:

5 springs IS over-the-top if you use 9's. I use only two attached between the 1 & 5 holes on the block and the 2 & 3 hooks on the claw. The resulting angle will stabilize the bridge. I could use 3, but I like the softer feel of 2. I also use a small amount of oil or grease under the trees and in the nut slots.

I use my tremolo w/ abandon. I actually play it like a pitch-bender and my guitar's in tune every time I pick it up.
