If you want to play heavy, get the fat configuration.

^I agree.

In my case anyway, Like Wild Rose said, budget was and still is the key. I purchased the stop dreaming start playing strat pack with the Squire Affinity and the 15w amp. I was extremely happy with this decision. Try the different entry level squires and see which one you like the most. Best of luck to you.

fat strats are bull. a real strat has 3 single coils, no humbucker. + you can get hum canceling by selecting the second and fourth position...

i was going to get myself a standard but ended up buying an OLP. what i suggest is learning a few chords, you'll know the C A G E D chords after a month or so, and then you can try out the guitars, feel how the neck is, see how you like it.

if you want to play metal-look at an epiphone. squiers require blues :P lol

Don't look past the telecasters. the special edition butterscotch affinity is a great deal and a dang fine guitar for the price and tele's are easy to upgrade or hotrod 8)

Good point Ida. I wonder if they make a startup pack with the Tele in it, that may be the op's best bet.

If your budget allows and if you tend to lean toward metal and/or hard rock I would go with the Standard Fat Strat(HSS).

If Your serious about learning consider a standard series and maybe a G-Dec Jr or Line 6 spider Amp You'll spend another 100 bucks but you'll have a better guitar and an amp with some features good for a beginner like backing tracks to jam with. Just my two cent's It's harder to stay with it if you have marginal gear.[/img]

Just about any Squier will do, as long as it gets a proper set up...

My suggestion is to play all the models you can. See which one you like. Although I am not a beginner, I have a Classic Vibe 60. It is one of the top of the line Squires, but in my opinion much better than any MIM Fenders I looked at that day (and I looked and played a lot). I also liked the Squire Standard HSS, but not enough to be a back up guitar to my Fender Highway One Stratocaster. Take a look.

Not a bad guitar for under $250.

Here is the Classic Vibe 60 which rocks and the one I ended up buying.

Again in the $330-$350 price range now, but still worth paying for. (I got mine for $310 after tax when I bought mine.)

IF YOU'RE SPENDING $250 BUY A USED #$@*&!% MEXICAN FENDER. USED STRATS GO FOR THAT ALL DAY LONG.

Actually I never buy used guitars anymore. You just never know what you are getting into with one. I was out looking at new Standard Fenders, just could not find one worth the money I'd be shelling out. If I couldn't find a new one in "factory" condition worth buying, why would I even bother with a used one?

Think what you want about Squires, but my Classic Vibe 60 is the perfect back up guitar to my #1.
