Hey there!
I just got a '89 squier strat, built in Korea. It seems i have heard before that fender used to finish their squiers with nitrocellulose before the days of polyurethane lacquer. Is this true? and if it is, does anyone know when they made the change?

I would really doubt if your finish is Nitro-cellulose laquer. It may be a laquer finish but a cheaper type such as acrylic. Poly has been around since the 70's But is was not cheap. Your guitar is probably poly By 89 price had come down signifignently. If it is a lacquer it would be showing it's age by now. If the finish is still in good shape there's your answer. Hope this helps

I have an '89 Korean SQuier II, and it does have a heavy finish on the fretboard. It's still shiny and not aged, so I would also guess acrylic.

Actually it's probably polyurethane. Acrylic laquer is not that durable and is usally a thinner coating. it take about 10 coats of laquer to equal 3 of urethane
