hey guys,

i've been lurking around here for a bit and thought it'd be nice to join and so i did, and i instantly got a question.

i've been playing spanish acoustic guitar for about 3 months now and i'm rather fast learning and a decent player for only 3 months of playing. ofcourse i only stick to chords right now. (i don't really think using tabs is real guitar playing! however, i'd use tabs to learn scales in the future)

my parents are giving me 300 euro's for my 18th birthday [10th june] and a while back when i was at our local music store, i instantly fell in love with those squier standard stratocasters! they have so much more character than the ibanez's and such, especialy when it comes to the sound. so i'm going to check them out friday, they have about 7 of them standing there for 250 euro's, obviously if i buy one i will ask them to set it up right and make sure the bridge is adjusted and such, but besides that, is there anything i should pay attention to when checking out these guitars? anything like, the serial number to check if they're from indonesia/china? i just want to be sure that i'm getting a decent guitar that will last me a while and will offer me alot of fun.

also, i like the look and feel of the maple neck, but are they as well made as the rosewood ones? i hope i'm not bothering you guys with these questions, and i'd be really thankful if you can help me out! surely, i will post pics when i've got it. if i'm lucky enough though, they might have the cherry sunburst in stock and that'd have my preference look-wise

i'm probably getting a marshall 30 dfx to go with it as they've gone from 250 to 180 euro's!

thanks in advance!
Denn

Hello, petmyhat, and welcome to the forum. I have a 2007 Squier Standard Stratocaster with a maple neck, and I love it! The maple neck on mine is one solid piece, so I would almost argue that it is better than a rosewood neck in terms of construction. We've debated the tonal qualities of the two woods on this forum, and I think it comes down to personal preference.

Since you have the luxury of comparing several examples of the same model, I would probably recommend paying particular attention to the necks: Feel the edges of the frets and also compare the finish on the back of each to find what feels best to you. I like a satin-finished neck, but some prefer a neck with a little more polish. Try them all and see which one feels best in your hands.

In any case, you can rest assured that you're getting a good instrument. I love my Squier, and I think you will too. So get one and have fun! 8)

Congratulations on your purchase! You do know that production of these guitars is being discontinued huh? At least that's the message I got from Musicians Friend! Good luck! :)

I would agree, the neck is a personal preference. I have various guitars, both Maple and Rosewood frets, both very nice to play, I can't say I've never really noticed a difference in tonal quality, but I prefer a Maple fretboard for both playing and appearance.
