New to electrics. Old acoustic guy!! Can anybody advise about adding third spring to the 2 already on my tremolo (Squier Affinity Strat HSS). rarely use whammy and want to tighten up bridge. Any advice? do I need to de-string to add spring?

No need to destring, although you should probably detune a little just in case. I have done it without doing so but you never know.

Just take that back plate off and attach a couple more springs. I have 4 in my partscaster and that is plenty.

Oh and be care full because if you lose a grip on the spring strange things can happen...like my pliers jumping back and taking a chunk of paint and finish off the guitar...luckily it's a project and I wasn't too worried about it.

Adding a spring will change the tension on the bridge, which will change the bridge height, which will change the action, which will change the intonation.

I suggest doing a complete setup after adding springs.
