Welcome aboard,

I think you have a smart friend as Squier puts out some very good guitars, also some guitars of questionable quality. That being said, try out lots of guitars and find one that you feel comfortable with. Also look at what you want to play...if all you want to play is Zepelin, ACDC, and Sabbath maybe a Squier is not for you...check out the type of guitar, your guitar idols play. In todays market, most inexpensive guitars are a descent quality. But really it's all about what will make you happy.

Check out the Squier STANDARD Series, NOT the Bullet or Affinity Series. The Standards are pretty much the best bang for the buck at about $200.

A couple of things:

1) The Squier Strat Standards are a good recommendation. However, if you can go up one level more to a Classic Vibe '60s model, it is well worth it. But fight to get at least a Standard, if you can.

2) Buy it from a guitar store that does setups, and ask them to "check over the setup". Squiers seem to be coming from the factory pretty well setup. But if yours needs tweaks, you won't know.

Your first guitar should be one that feels comfortable, so go out and try all different makes, styles, designs. Bar your finger across the neck, pluck the strings, does it feel comfortable? Awkward? How does the body of the guitar feel when you hold it? Eventually, you will come across one that not only "trips your trigger "in looks, but also feels very natural when you play it.
