Hey Folks,
Well....I did it again. I bought -another- guitar. This makes the fourth in the past year and brings the count up to 21 total. This was a very impulsive buy...mainly because it was a pretty sweet deal. I had walked into Guitar Center to get a MIDI to USB adapter for my keyboard and while I was browsing around, I saw this Indonesian Standard Strat for $99. I don't have any pics of her yet, but she's got the black "sparkle" finish. The setup is really whacked on this thing but otherwise she's in very good condition...just 1 slight scuff on the front, very nice neck, the bridge is a 2 pt similar (or identical?) to an Am Std, etc.. I remember a few years back that these things were going for around $350 new at a small local joint. The first time I saw them I was rather blown away by the quality and even the store owner had said he was really impressed with them so finding one for $99 was irresistible.

Anyways, I have a couple of dumb questions here. First, anyone know what kind of wood the body is made from (or how I could find out)? I seem to remember that these were actually made from alder but it's been a few years and I could be quite easily mistaken. It's not really a big deal or anything...not like I"m going to take it back or anything but I'm curious as I may refinish it later.

Also did Fender/Squire stop making guitars in Indonesia and if so, anyone know why? It seems like all the Squires are coming out of China these days...not that I'm complaining. I have a Crafted In China Standard Strat "Special Edition" that I bought last year that's simply fabulous. I am curious though...was it just a cost/labor thing or was there some kind of specific issue with Indonesia?

Alrighty, thanks for any info!
Jim

Its either Alder or Agathis. Check the Specifcations link on the Squier site for your guitar. Also, as far as I know, they still make most Squier Standards in Indonesia. Some Squier Vintage Modifieds are made in India, some of the Vintage Modifieds (like the Jagmaster) are made in China, while others, (like the Squier Custom Teles) are made in Indonesia. I think all the Affinities, Classic Vibes, and Bullets are made in China...so they have it all spread out as far as I know...

Well, I know the guitar is at least a couple of years old (I bought it used) so the current specs may or may not apply. I know that the Squire Standard I bought last August was "Crafted in China" (not Indonesia) which is why I wasn't certain...and the Chinese Standard is Alder. Any idea where I could find some info on the older Indonesian Squire Standards? Any way to get info from the serial number or something?

Thanks,
Jim

The first 2 digits of the Indonesian Serial number are the year, and if it is on or after the date that is posted on the Squier page Specs sheet, it has those features. I did not realize some Standard Strats were being made in China, as I am more of a Telecaster guy...

Thanks BF...that certainly helps. According to that, this is a 2004 Indo Standard and the specs posted there do certainly seem in line with the instrument itself.

I actually got a little "jam time" in with the guitar today and she's pretty decent. Desperately needs new strings and a proper setup but otherwise a nice feel and sound to her...all and all a great deal for what I payed. I'm still not quite sure what I'm going to do with her yet...I'm thinking about refinishing her with a more classic 2 tone sunburst as I'm not real big on the sparkle finish there and I'm toying with some other ideas too...considering that I only payed $100 for her, I can afford to "screw around" a bit :D.

Alrighty, again thanks for the info...it helped!

Peace,
Jim
