Hey guys,

So, I'm new to the boards.. I will be picking up my first Fender in a few days.. Went over to look at them today.. It's just a simple Squire Bullet in sunburst.. I went in wanting black, but came out wanting the sunburst..

This is not my first guitar though.. I got a BC Rich Warlock Rave about 10 years ago for christmas.. It was used, but in solid shape.. Regardless of the overall condition, it needed a little massaging inside, and I never ended up playing it much.. So I'm still very much of a beginner.. However, I do still desire to learn..

I already have stuff like the tuner, the cable, picks and an amp (Peavey Envoy 110 40w), so all I wanted to do was get a solid, basic guitar to start off on.. And apparently these Squire Strats are one of the best beginner guitars you can buy.. Plus they're easily upgradable later on..

So I have a few questions..

1. What is a very good (and preferably pretty cheap) how-to DVD or CD-ROM? I feel that actually watching and/or interacting with a disc will be easier than with a book..

2. What are some good things to eventually change out on the guitar to make it better?

3. It seems like these are easy to work on.. Is this true? I've never done any more maintenance on a guitar than tuning it, but I want to start with this guitar and do the work myself..

4. Is there anyone who has a highly modified Squire who actually prefers using it over their other, higher-end guitars?

If I think of anything else I'll post up.. I look forward to your responses.. Thanks!!

Yes, I have a Squier Affinity Strat that is fairly heavily modified and I still have more mods to go. So far I've modified the cosmetic parts, like the pickguard and knobs as well as set it up with some .12s. The best mod that's made the most notable difference was when I added Texas Specials to replace the stock pickups. Wow. It sounds amazing. If you ever get the chance to buy some Fender Custom Shop pickups, do it, they make an unbelievable difference in tone. I was going to replace the neck, but decided against it since the neck it has it just fine. It's not as thin as my Fender Strat, but not so thick I can't get my hand around it. It's just right. The tremolo is really annoyingly bad in comparison to my Fender, so that's the next major part I need. And while the tuning machines aren't terrible, they're not as good as my Fender's either, so those are going to be replaced. Once these last two modifications are done, then yes I would rank it up there with my Fender MIM. And the great thing about a Squier is that they're cheap enough to drill holes in and stuff without detracting $500 from the overall value.

As far as a how-to DVD, I recommend Fender's "Getting Started on Electric Guitar". Keith Wyatt is a fabulous teacher and it shows on the DVD, which is well laid out.

You can see Keith play. On the videos posted on this site for the Winter NAMM Kickoff, find the Blasters. The guitarist playing the telecaster and not singing is Keith....

Oh, and welcome to the forums. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do...

You may want to check out youtube.com I've seen a few nifty guitar riffs, tricks, and short lessons. All by accident as I was looking at some tele players. Happy Pickin" :D
