Greetings all,
Just transfered from an old acoustic to a white Squire Stratocaster (and LOVIN it!) I have a quick question about the setup for the tremelo springs. I have removed the backplate, found the spring claw (connected to the three springs) and started adjusting the claw screws to release the bridge from the body as per the manual located on this site. I bought the guitar with the bridge screwed tight down. As I started unscrewing I noticed that after a little more than half an inch, thr bridge was still stuck fast to the body, I could bend the tremelo arm down to acheive lower notes but not up for higher notes. Can you give me an idea on how much I should loosen the claw in order to get free tremelo movement both up and down? I'm a little paranoid about unscrewing it too much (if there's anything to be afraid of at all).

Thanks in advance!

apologies for the double post,
I figured out the tremelo settings, now have good movement both up and down with the tremelo arm. It didn't take as much claw releif as I thought it would. I have also read that the Squires have bad luck with tuning when using the tremelo arm, no signs of that at all so far so I'm happy :P

Join the club. All Strats have issues with this ... Fender and Squier. There are things that can be done to improve the situation. Namely, (1) lubricate the saddles, nut and string tree, and (2) remove the bridge float. If you need more info, do a search in the Strat forums. This has been hashed in agaonzing detail.

Having set up quite a few Squier Strat trems, I have found that you need three springs for 9-42 strings and (ideally) four for 10-46's. This is not a hard and fast rule, but avoid having the claw screws too far out from their holes. Also, adjust the six screws on which the bridge base plate pivots so that they have about 1/3 - 1/2mm gap under their heads otherwise thay may "bind" the base plate and it will not pivot smoothly.
