SO I just got my hands on a used Squier Affinity Strat for $75, so it's time for a project! Already ordered a hand-wired pickguard with NEOVIN pups, I bought Fender Standard tuners, roller string trees, and am planning of turning it into a hardtail, will probably buy a bridge setup as well...maybe not, we'll see. The guy I bought it from purchased it a few years back, tried to learn how to play, and then just chucked it into the corner. The neck is dirty and gummy, the headstock looks like it has pencil marks, and the body has a few dings on it:

Before you all say that I should just take the cash and buy a new MIM Fender, that it'll actually cost me less...etc...etc... That's probably true, but it's also cheaper for me to go to Ikea and buy some bookcases then to build them in my garage. My point is, it's not about the cash, though I don't want to drop bank on it, it's more about modding something with my own hands, about putting a piece of me in my guitar, adn just having fun.

Now, here's my question; should I simply rough up the paint with sandpaper, primer it and paint it, or should I strip it down to wood, and re-paint it from there? Will adding a few more layers of paint, affect it in any major way? I'd rather do it that way if possible, but what are your opinions?

I'll post photos as I go along!

I don't think you have to worry about tone on this guitar. So the sand/filler and paint job would probably be the way to go. I was at the Hard Rock last week looking at rock star guitars and I saw dents, chipped paint and anything goes on those guitars.

Once again it all depends on it's intended use. I don't know what Neovin pickups look like but I would go with humbuckers. The louder the better. Maybe even some distortion pickups. At the very least Hot Rails. Don't spend much. Buy the Performers or knockoffs. But that's just me.

You seem to be deleting the tremelo which means you are either looking for sustain or tone. I don't think you are going to find either one but you can save yourself the money and put a block of wood and lock to tremelo like Eric Clapton.

Yeah, think I might just block it out, right now I'm just sketching it out, pricing etc...etc... and think blocking it right.

I don't have a problem with chips and scratches, I just want to do the custom paint job, and THEN let it get scratched and chipped as I use it, so that it becomes my guitar, know what I mean. I'm one of those that believes you hav to use what you buy, and eventually even my Gibson will probably getting scratched and dinged.

Thanks for your input, really appreciate it.
