I'm the proud owner of an 05 satin trans Strat (fairly modded) and I just love it, it plays so nicely, of course it's by no means an axe for metal stuff, even with a Hotrail installed (Seymour, make an Invader jr.) but it does sound as good as any of the Fender strats I've played.

Here's a story for ya....went down to my local Guitar Center to try out a new Bugera Head...(Bugera 6260!)...and of course I asked for a standard series Squier Strat,...I must have sat there for upwards of 2 hours just playing through that head, this guy walks over and says he thought I was playing like a "vintage" strat....because of the sweet tones i was throwing out of that head & cab combo! Just goes to show you, sometimes it's not all about the "name" on the guitar, but the player's skills! I guess as long as Squier keeps making 'em like theyre making 'em NOW, then they'll ALWAYS have a loyal fan base....no one wants to pay highg prices for stuff they can get at a more "discounted" price...have you SEEn the Vintage Modified series yet?...they're freakin' AWESOME!....think I'll get one for myself for '09....after all I been a good boy!....LoL!

Exactly. For 100 bucks I basically figured one of two things would happen..

1. I'd actually learn how to play.

or

2. Even if I didn't learn to play, it'd look really slick on my wall.

lol

I have a couple of teles and a couple of strats. One tele and one strat are MIM´s the other tele is MIJ and the last strat is a chinese affinity. For the price the affinity will give you a lot of strat no doubt. It has some fretbuzz and it doesn´t feel quite as nice as my MIM strat, but the buzz isn´t audible through any of my amps so it sounds totally ok. I put a set of CS 69´s in my MIM strat so I upgraded the affinity with the ceramic pups and it sounds more than OK for the amount of money I have used on it. I am also waiting for a Squier Vintage Modified Tele Custom II selling for just a little more here than the affinity, so I´m curious to compare these two when it arives.

I too had to change the pickups in one of my Squiers....I went with a little known manufacturer called (don't laugh!) "Guitar Fetish"....they have these pickups that are wrapped in BLUE copper....and they sound GREAT!....I also want to get some new Tele pickups for an Affinity Tele someone gave me recently, I may go with Seymour Duncans, as they have the most "vintage" sound I've heard....at least to my ears. Now if I could only get my hands on a tweed covered Fender Bassman amp....my life would be COMPLETE and my bout with G.A.S. would be OVER!!!.....LoL!!

I know this is an older post but as it's still going and as I just bought another Squire, I'd like to add my $.02 worth for anyone who cares. I haven't read all of the responses so if I add anything terribly redundant, please forgive me.

As the OP stated, there are folks who have never played any Squire who will swear up and down that they suck. There are also those who believe that anything other than an American Standard is nothing but garbage. Obviously these are very unfair assessments but unfortunately a lot of people take stock in what a person who is "experienced" may have to say. So as a person who's been playing guitar (both live and in the studio) for over 25 years, there are a few observations I have to make about Squires.

In my Strat collection I have a MIM Standard, a Chinese Squire Standard "Special Edition", a Bullet, a made-from-parts Frankenstrat, a Lotus Strat and my newest acquisition, an Indonesian Standard. This is of course in additon to my many acoustics and other electrics which including the Strats is now 22 guitars...in other words, I have a better than average basis for comparison :D. Which guitar do I play the most? The MIM...mainly because I've had her the longest (at least the longest of any of my Strats), done the most work on to personalize her to my sound and my playing style etc. That said, both of my Squire Standards are every bit "as good" as my MIM was when she was brand new....in fact, in some ways they are even better instruments (the finish on my Chinese Standard is simply luscious!). The higher end Squires are an outstanding value for any musician...at least any musician who doesn't have the words "Made in the USA" wedged up his/her butt! LOL!!! The -only- nits I have about my Squire Standards are the pickups (which aren't really -that- bad considering the cost of the instrument) and the trem blocks...both of which also compared to my MIM when she was brand new. Realistically, I don't expect a $200 guitar (or even a $400 guitar) to have $250 pickups, so in my book, that's a given. Also considering the cost and figuring how much Fender/Squire saves in mass production, I can also understand their use of low mass alloys for trem blocks and as with pickups, this is something the user can easily change himself/herself. Some more experienced players may get a little picky about the fret work but again here, on both of my Standards, it's certainly on par with or better than more expensive instruments bearing the actual Fender name.

Up till now I've been talking about my Standards but as I said before, I also have a Bullet. Now for those who may be wondering why a guy with 25+ years of playing experience and so many guitars to start with...why I would want a Bullet, the answer is that I wanted something down in the studio that others could "beat on" and that I could setup for Eb tuning without having to go back and forth on my other instruments....and for that she fits the bill perfectly. The Bullet and the Affinitys are as others have stated, good entry level instruments. To a person who is used to playing $1000+ instruments, certainly the Bullets are going to be garbage...the pickups are cheesy, the fret work is non-existant and the tuning keys are little more than toys (although it must be noted that the Affinitys do have better tuners than the Bullets). However it must be noted that this is also a perspective issue as well...to a person who's just picking up a guitar for the first time, they are not going to appreciated the differences between a $100 instrument and a $1000 instrument. For what they are, the Bullets and the Affinitys are actually very good for the money and certainly better quality than a person could have ever gotten back in the 70's and 80's for the same price.

So to address the OP's question of "which Squires to buy and which to avoid", the answer is simple...it depends on who you are and what you are looking for. If you are a person who is just picking up a guitar for the first time, then a Squire Bullet or an Affinity is a very good instrument to "cut your teeth on". They are also an excellent instrument for the younger student who may not be as careful with his/her instrument as a seasoned adult may be (my earlier guitars have -many- scars from the more reckless days of my youth! LOL!). For the person who is "stepping up" from that first guitar...maybe something their parents or even a spouse bought them at Walmarts (read "First Act"), then a Squire Standard is truly an outstanding instrument. They also make a lovely backup instrument for those who may already own an MIM or even an Am Std.. It also must be said that for those folks like myself who don't always have money dripping out of various orifices, but would still like a "quality" instrument, the Standards are a wonderful alternative to their Fender branded counter-parts. Of course as others have said the top of the line Squires such as the Deluxe models and so on are simply an unbeatable value...truly "pro" instruments.

My advice to anyone considering a new guitar...be it their first or their twenty first, is to try a few Squires and get the best that you can afford that makes you feel good about your playing. Don't worry about what the logo says on the headstock and don't worry about where it was made...just play it and if you like it, that's the guitar for you :D.

Again just my humble $.02 worth for anyone who cares.
Jim

I've been playng guitar since 1989, so I'm not a beginner. I bought an affinity strat, modded it(seymore duncan sh-4, new paint, ect..) and plays as good as my ibanez rg770 and my washburn n4. I guess it s just a one of a kind, but it is a great instrument. I have less that $250 bucks in it.

I have bought a Squier Strat, from the California Series. It is a good guitar for me, it sounds good with my Frotman Amp. Also i think the best part of music is how crative you are, so if you have a good song no matter wich instrument you use.

Plus, there's nothing funny about Guitar Fetish. They make sick products for Squiers. :D

Agreed! i own an affinity squire strat and it sounds terrible compared to my buddies standard squire strat. im not buying another guitar until i learn A LOT more on my affinity strat so i can build up appreciation for the current guitar and justify the purchase of a better squire. :)
