I started this topic because there's lots of people out there asking what guitar to buy from Squier's current lineup. Many people talk trash about Squier instuments without even looking at them. Many people think Squier=Crap. I believe this happens because of some instruments that aren't that good for REAL musicians usage: Recording, playing live and rehearsing. In my opinion I would consider anything from the Affinity series and below not that good, but this doesn't mean they are crap or useless. If you're a real musician these are the ones you should stay away from:

- Affinity series. These are sub-standard instruments that dont't meet the minimum specs for what I find to be a real instrument. They are good for kids to begin learning how to play; to use in videos or movies if you want to smash one or something like that because they're cheaper and still look like the real thing; if you want to have a custom axe these are a solid base for modding; for learning and practicing they are perfect!

- Bullet series. Again, this one is priced below the Affinity ones; if you always wanted a guitar on your wall just because it looks cool, this might be the one.

- SE series. This one is only available as the cheapest pack, even cheaper than the Affinity ones!

- Hello Kitty series. Even though not stated in the specs, these belong to the Affinity series. (look at the headstock)

Other than the ones I listed you should find some nice instruments. I would advise you to start with the Standard series and anything above. These are just a little more expensive than the Affinity ones but the extra cost is well worth it. Other than this I would strongly recommend:

- Deluxe series;

- Classic Vibe series;

- Vintage Modified series.

Very, very nice ones.
Both lists apply to Squier basses also.
Hope I cleared things up for you people!

I agree. I have an Affinity Strat, Standard Tele, and Master Series Esprit. Once properly set up, the Tele and Esprit came to life.

The Strat on the other hand sounds thin, even through the bridge humbucker, but would be a great base for building upon. Other than the pickups, the quality is exceptional. If I were just starting out and received this guitar I would be stoked.

The only other area of concern for me is the width of the fretboard at the nut (excluding the Esprit). It is narrower than my other guitars. Some days I love it, and some days it gets annoying.

I can speak from the experience of owning many guitars over the last 30 years. I buy guitars that I think are good values, and sound good.
A couple years ago, I found a used Squire Affinity Stratocaster in like new condition for a really good price to use for a modding project. I found it to be kinda cheap, and not a really worthwhile base for the mods I wanted to try, so I sold it.
Last year I found another Squire at a pawn shop that caught my eye. It is a 2004 Deluxe series Satin Trans Fat Strat. Now that guitar is more like it! It has a really nice satin honey finish over a solid mahogany body, rear routed controls(no pickguard) Duncan designed humbucker w/ 2 Alnico single coils, 2 point fulcrum tremelo. Some pretty high-end features for a guitar I paid $140 for!!! This guitar is a really nice axe worth every penny I paid(which wasn't much).
It really depends on what you want and expect. Does it compare to my MIA Strat? Not really. Does it sound as good as my '72 RI Strat? No, but for what it is, it was worth it. Do I like to play it? Sure do!!!

Good post by Joey1234 ... I heartily agree. I have played a bunch of Squiers recently. The high-end Squiers can be surprisingly nice guitars, even for those of us who have been around a long time and typically play Fender instruments.

8) I now have 7 squires, and after setting them up, they ALL play nicely. I have 3 "Pawnshop Orphans" one of which is a black 20th ann. Affinity. One is Red, with no name on the neck-plate, and cheap Japanese Tuners, like are on my '74 Martin Sigma 12, but the serial # is CY [for Cyhineese] lol. Any body seen one of these? I used to own a Guitar shop, in the '70s, and worked on hundreds of vintage Fenders, I can't see much difference in the play-ability of the Squires, and the REAL Fenders[after set-up/tweekin']. I owned a '57, wish I still did, but, it wasn't all that Great. I've owned most of the most sought-after Axes, and have played ALL of 'em. Still have a '70 Gib 335 Custom, '58 Gib 125, '65 Epi Casino ES330, '65 Fender Electric 12, an' a couple others. I have a [ these were bought new] Squire Jag-Master, a Squire Butterscotch Blonde Affinity Tele, and a Squire Std. [Fat]Strat, in the natural wood finish. Like was stated, they are GREAT!! :D For Modding/Hot Roddin', Nothing beats a good Franken-Strat, :shock: Especially, when it sez "Fender" on it!! I don't know about "youze guys" but when I can buy a playable "Fender Squire" Ax fer 50 to 70 bux, in the local Pawn Shop, I find it Hard to Resist. I changed the pups in the Tele, installed "Guitar Fetish" "Lil Puncher rails, "Cool Vintage" winding. Solved all of the String Damping/Pull-- [out of tune sound] ya get when ya run a Tele, or Strat pup too close [in the neck position] to get some TONE! Those pups give Tele sound in a HB. I also think that the cheaper ceramic magnet pups on the Affinity Axes, are HOTTER than the Alnico 5s, in the Std. Models ! :? I love my Squires, and , since I Know what the Real Fenders are like, :P I am not in a Hurry to spend an extra Grand for one!! :wink: I'll play a Squire on any Gig, and I was on the Road, for over 10 years. 8)

What do you say to the Squier-haters when they say your guitars aren't "real" Fenders?

I dunno. What do you say to Fender MIM haters when they say that a MIM is not a real Strat?
It does not matter to me. It is their lack of knowledge. My care factor = 0.0003

In the interest of full disclosure, I am the proud owner of a Candy Apple Red Squier Standard Stratocaster. I think they're tremendous value for the money! 8)

A guitar is a guitar.
If you like it, the way it plays, the way it sounds, the way it makes you feel when you nail that riff youve been searching for, NOTHING matters when you look at the name stamped on the headstock. Hey, I have respect for the purists. They prefer what they prefer.
I also own an American Deluxe, a reg MIA, a MIM, a MIJ, a few Squiers, some I have customized, and other brands that will remain unnamed.
It's as personal as food and who you bed with..just my humble opinion... :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted: :twisted:

This reminds me of Gone in 60 Seconds something like "They go to Barneys in their red Ferraris. everyone has one, they are all parked their..." A Ferrari is only as good as the driver. The same applies to the guitar.

absolutely!
I mean when you first learn how to drive, you're not going to get a Ferrari because a) it's too expensive and b) you can't be driving a Ferrari in 50km/h!

I picked up a new blemished butterscotch blonde Affinity Tele on Ebay for a decent price. Overall it has nice action and decent pups, but a lousy selector switch. The wood used for the neck appears to be a little light in weight, but with some new electrical components and wiring, I can make this into a great sounding guitar.

hey hey hey, I've played MY freaking Bullet Strat (which I love like a son), and a '87 classic MIA Fender Stratocaster. I can't tell the difference.

must be my beginnerishness showing.
