Hey Squier stranglers,
I have an opportunity to purchase an almost new Squier 51. I looked on H-C and the reviews look nice enough. Anyone on the forum have any specifics they can pass on about the quality and versatilitiy of this particular axe?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx in advance........

I was able to pick up a '51 for about $60 new from guitar center on clearance. It's not as lovable as my strat, but it actually is quite versatile. If the price is right, I'd take the offer. It's a very unique instrument which is out of production and may end up being quite collectible. If you're a beginner, the '51 is a bargain and can be easily upgraded. It has a tolerable humbucker and mediocre single coil. The coil tap is a nice bonus too. The weakest part is the neck which is made out of some very cheap maple. The indonesian factories are notorious for not being 100% precise with their measurements so each guitar is a little different. This can be a problem if you plan on modifying the '51. If you're going to leave it alone or just swap the electronics, you shouldn't have any problem. I really enjoy mine
Good luck!

the humbucker is ok but the single coil is weak. It has a very nice and fat neck on it which I love but the body is thinner than a stratocaster. The hardware is good also. All around a good guitar. Most people bought them to mod for which is a very good candidate.

Hey Tim,
Thanks for the info. The guitar is brand new and the guy wants $120 for it. Not a lot of money, but I know these were not much more new. I want to use it as a 'no worries' guitar. Something I can toss in the back of car and take on trips without putting my Nice Strat in peril.
In terms of Mods, I have a Duncan JB I can put in the Bridge and a tele lipstick laying around. Hmm, could be a dangerous combination.

To be honest, I'll probably keep it stock and play it for a while before I decide on any modifications.

Time to go pick it up....

I used mine for a set on last nights gig, This is one guitar I have after I set it up it plays great and sounds very good, BUT I just don't play it that much. I like it and will not sell it, but after last night I was thinking, I need to bring it out more.

I've heard guys complain about frets and crooked screws, but even though it's a budget guitar everything is tight and the fretwork is as good as my new Jazzmaster....YES it's that good.

And it sounds great, I like the tone of it and through a 2 speaker amp it cuts through the mix just fine and the Humbucker isn't so powerful it dominates the 2 pickup mix

I absolutely loved this guitar. I picked mine up at a media play that was going out of business, because Guitar Center didn't have it. This was prior to them going on clearance. I got the thing for 70 bucks! How excited was I? The reason I bought the guitar is because I fell in love with my best friends telecaster, but I myself was more familiar with a strat. What a combination this guitar was for me. I'll rave and rave about this guitar any day. I recently sold mine and completely regret it. Be careful what you pay though, most of these were bought for 99$ when they went on clearance, if no lower, and I've seen some craigslisters price-jacking.

I have a 3 y.o. 51(blond with blk pickguard) with the following mods: Carvin replacement bridge(bolts right on!), drilled through body and added tele string "bullets", changed pickups to Seymour Duncan in bridge and Kinman '69 strat at neck. Guitar plays great! It only needed minor neck adj., but it is solid. Love the tone! You can't go wrong buying one(they're still cheap!), and it's great for mods. You won't ruin an expensive strat to see if you like floyd rose! Mine was made in Indonesia, and the frets are fine, finish is perfect, and it looks killer.
