1954-2008=54 years or less of production. They probably miscalculated the date of the guitar.

Also most guitars are made out of wood. The only exceptions have been the Jackson Randy Rhodes Crop Circle guitar (some sort of aluminum) and various plastic composit guitars throughout the years.

Hope this helps,

I think one of the Eric Clapton guitars was auctioned at $30,000 so it is not too far fetched a price. Maybe it is a prototype from Leo Fender's garage. I doubt it but stranger things have happened.

Keep an eye out for those garage sales and take mom with you. You never know what priceless antique you might run into for a couple of bucks.

80 years old would be 1928 and at first I doubted there even was such a thing as an electric guitarthen. Turns out I was right, but not by much:

"The earliest electric guitars were hollow bodied acoustic instruments with tungsten pickups made by the 'Rickenbacker' company in 1931."

Reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_guitar

Even if they're off by a year or two, as a previous posted pointed out, Fender didn't exist back then in any case.

I've seen some people erroneously post that Leo Fender invented the electric guitar. He didn't and never claimed to; he can be credited with at least co-inventing the modern solid body electric guitar though. I use "co" because Rickenbacker and several others were also working along similar lines.

I think Fender gets credit though for the idea of making them modular (bolt on neck, etc.) to streamline manufacturing and make his guitars more affordable.

and Leo Fender was 19 in 1928 and was not making guitars then and probably fooling around with radios. the kid probably saw the Antiques Roadshow from Salt Lake City. I saw the preview on it and there was a Fender Stratocaster on the table. See the link above.

I saw the 1957 Strat on the Antiques Roadshow, and, with a period-correct amp, $50,000 is a reasonable estimate. I've seen several guitars sell for $45,000.

I saw a Antiques Road show a while back that featured a Fender Esquire from 1952 or 53. It look a lot like a Telecaster. It was estimated at 35000 to 40000 If I remember correctly.

does seem a little odd but I don't believe it could be 80 years old... sure the person selling it was 80 instead?
"wood body" could mean natural and not painted? for a guitar that old probably wouldn't have had paint anyway so it seems possible.
