Hi everybody,

I've been trolling around this forum for a while but since I finished modding my squier I figured I post it up. It started life as a black 20th aniversary model and has been through a couple of revisions so far.

It went from black to this:

I went a little overboard with the mods the first time through since I figured regardless of what happens I'll have the parts to make a nice strat. It recieved a CIJ 62 reissue neck, and CS Fat 50s.

I had an american trem ordered for it but learned later that the screw spacing was different, so I was stuck using the diecast saddles. The screw spacing turned out to be the least of my concerns, since it turns out that Chinese Affinity strats are .25" thinner than other import strats. This also meant that the awesome looking neck I got was also way to thick for the body and really threw off the heights for the saddles on the bridge, as well as the pickups, everything was cranked to maxium heights possible to get it within spec. It all worked but I hated having to settle with that.

So I bought a body and threw all the good parts on to it, but that's a different story.

I ended up taking the Mayer looking paint job off (didn't like the idea of a cbs style head stock with that paint combo) and stuck to a budget minded build this time around. Guitar Fetish Kluson style tuners they fit with the 10mm conversion bushings they offer but because of the wide tuner spacing there are gaps in the back. I also hand painted the silver in the Squier font.

Gold hardware all the way around, again I went to Guitar Fetish for the trem, full sized steel block and stamped saddles. I ended up needing to mill about 3mm off the end of the block to get it to fit though. I went with overwound pickups for $15 again off Guitar Fetish in the clearance section, they get a little bit muddy with distortion but for $15 bucks I can't complain, they are a huge improvement over the stock squires but I'll probably end up getting either Texas Specials or similar in the future. When I do the body color will probably change again...

having 6 extra screws, I don't think it's too hard to do!
plus you can't be changing the strings very often!

Wild Rose....
Looks nice, but with all those mods when did you have time to play it!!
I'm sure it's probably not your only guitar. Great work, though. I kind of liked the Mayer-esque version with the cool racing stripe, but you probably don't care.
I'm not much into modding. I usually play them as they are to keep things simple. I did piece together a frankenstein axe over the past few weeks, though. I have an '84 MIJ Yamaha SJ550, which is their version of a Fat tele with dual humbuckers/ coil top. Has the bridge plate like a tele, etc...
The neck went south on it after 20+ years of spanking and I left it for dead. I played the frets off the thing. Too much Santana. I bought a used Squier 51 and ended up tossing that sweet playing one piece maple neck onto the yamaha after drinking too much Rangpur gin. Best thing I ever did. I ended up having to buy new aftermarket graphtek bridge saddles because of the greater neck thickness and the old saddles, but ended up with quite the player. It plays as good as my MIM strat. Nothing like a sweet Fender neck, even if it's off a squier!!!

Thanks for all the postive comments! I not sure about everyone else but I personnaly left the rear cover off for a couple of reasons.

I don't think anyone makes a replacement cover for import strats, though I could be wrong, but if they did I ever find one I would most likely need to redrill the body to fit.

When I was putting together the guitar I was planning on trying out different gauge strings, I went from 9s and am currently running 13s on it, so being lazy and having the cover off made things a little easier for me.

On a side note I have a nicer set of pickups waiting to get thrown on  I should probably make another thread for this but does any one have any recommendations for a basic recording setup?

As a new Squier owner, and guitar player, I am amazed at all that can be done with these guitars at home. How long did you own your squier before you started to modify it? Did it make a world of difference in sound quality?

2blueranger-

I don't remember keeping the guitar stock for very long. I remember changing to light weight strings pretty quickly after getting the guitar and not really know what I was doing... suffice to say I remember struggling keeping the guitar in tune after the trem.

Now after the mods the guitar sounds great with the heavier gauge strings I'm running, it now stays in tune perfectly after using the trem as well. All in all I'd say it feels and sounds like a completely different guitar.

Don't get me wrong though a good setup on a squier and a decent amp and practice will probably do more for how your guitar sounds than any other mods you do it.
