This past Thursday, on my way home from my armory, I stopped at a trading post store that usually has a nice selection of guitars, amps and other music related stuff. I figured I might find/buy a guitar to take to Iraq with me, for not knowing if they'd sell decent guitars and amps at a Post Exchange (PX), nor if I'd actually be going to Iraq. For now, it's looking like I may not be able to go (P3 - non-deployable overseas), but pending further evaluation, here is what I found.

It's a used Squier Tele, Metallic Blue, with white pearloid pickguard and maple fingerboard, and I could tell it's used with my first chord change. The frets have both been filed down, and the edges dressed, so along with the typical narrow Tele neck, this thing is lightning fast to get up and down the neck on. I didn't really pay much attention to the string height, except that I did notice they seemed close enough to stop the strings with little effort, but not so close to nullify the filed down frets. I'd plugged it into a used Squier Champion solid-state combo that was close by, and for not needing another solid-state combo I'd be looking to buy it too, and the tones from the guitar hinted that the pickups may not be stock.

I asked the owner how much, and was told $175.00, so although it's possible I may not be going to Iraq next year, I'm seriously thinking about buying this Squier Tele anyway. Currently, my MIM Fender Standard Telecaster (2005, Sunburst w/w-b-w pickguard and maple fingerboard) is my go-to guitar, for jamming (just a short reach away from the computer desk), and although the mojo factor's about the same between a worked over used Squier Tele and a stock Fender Standard Telecaster, I could see the Fender being replaced as my go-to guitar. If I do buy this Squier Tele, I'll take the Fender apart, and send the body to Warmouth for a Jazzmaster/Jaguar tremolo route, along with plugging the string-through holes (to make way for a Jazzmaster/Jaguar bridge), then install a Fender Jazzmaster/Jaguar tremolo system, once the body's back from Warmouth.

To be honest, this one is more tempting than the $175.00 Gretsch Synchromatic Junior Jet I'd found at the same place, last year, and missed out on 'cause I couldn't get over my (somewhat) aversion to purple.

Matt

You can get a new Squier Tele Adffinity Series for $ 165, why pay more for a used one ?

Because a standard is much better than a rock bottom price, entry level affinity.

Hello Surfability,

At $175 that seem a might bit salty as
musicians friend sells the standard for $199
with free shipping.

But If you gotta have it, well there's no
turning back.

Best of luck with your choice.

Cheers.

It don't really matter that it's a bit more than brand new, lower end Squier Teles, as the price difference is more than made up for in the modifications done by the previous owner.

I did buy it. Since it has a top-loading bridge, I'm thinking about trying a vibrola/tune-o-matic combination, along with Lipstick pickups.
