You should probably find yourself someone who has been playing for a while or a tech at the music store to make sure it is set up right. You will probably figure it out yourself in a year or so and find things you like better like setting the strings closer to the fret board if you are into soloing or higher if you play chords so they don't smash against the frets when you are strumming.

I would wait before doing mods because there are a lot of variables like what amp you are using, what effects you buy, what sound are you looking for, where you play.

Also you might consider another guitar for moding and leaving this one alone if it plays well until you have some experience taking them apart.

No sense in having a guitar in pieces that you can't play. Practice time is way to important.

For a beginner I would recommend a complete professional setup and that is it. Learn to play before you mod.

I agree that learning is important, but if you want to learn to mod there are several easy things you can do.

First off, learn to do a proper set-up. Look under resouces. Fender provides good instructions on how to get it to "stock specs". This will allow you to make sure it goes back together properly after each mod.

Some easy things to start with are tuners, sheilding behind the pickgaurd, and changing the pickgaurd and other plastic parts. As things progress, look toward new nuts, saddles, and electronics.

Start slowly with simple things and make sure you understand what your doing and how it effects the guitar. If you ever feel like it's too much then stop. Do further research and proceed as needed. If that means taking it to a tech, so be it. However, while you're there try to learn something.

It does help to have more than one guitar while doing this. That way you can still play at all times. Even then it's best fit your mods in at string changes. Do a few mods, set it up and play. When time comes for new strings, throw another mod at it and keep playing.

Good luck and enjoy.
