Hey there
I am in the process of stripping the paint of my 87 squier strat and have found a maple veneer on the top of what maybe basswood?
I am not sure.

Anyone know anything about these 87 bodies? Its a great guitar.

Got any pictures?

have you stripped the edges or the back tummy cut to see what wood is underneath the veneer?

I'm afraid I can't tell what kinds of wood you have there. Maple veneer? What was the original finish? Usually veneers would be used with "see through" finishes, like sunbursts.

That's what Fender Mexico does. Here's a pile of veneered Mexican body blanks waiting to be shaped and routed:

I am not sure it is Maple although it looks like it. It is thin, it is on the front and back of the guitar and the wood between the two is darker with grain, It is not plywood.

The finish was very thick red with what seems to be a white primer underneath.

The guitar was bought new in 86 or 87, made in Korea,

I do appreciate your help here...!
