Guitar newbie here. I returned my last Squier Stratocaster because the jack was broken and the A string kept buzzing. I got a replacement but now the open D, G and B strings keep buzzing!! The store is pretty good with returns so should I send it back for another Strat?

Guitar need a set up.
The store must do a free set up before guitar go at you home

I think you mean "should" instead of "must". Stores don't have an obligation to sell setup instruments, in fact many/most web shops ship them in the box they got from the factory, without even opening it.

@Motar: But st52 is right in that a setup is what the guitar needs. The problem could be with the nut (slots), but those happen quite rarely these days. So I'm guessing string height and/or bridge/tremolo settings in general.

Try negotiating a nice setup price with the shop - if you don't get a good offer, you can always return it. (But there are no guarantees that the next guitar would be in better setup, either...)

Or do a DIY setup. Help from a more experienced friend would be heaven sent, but following these instructions step-by-step might also help: https://support.fender.com/hc/en-us/art ... -properly-

You could be right; store should.
IMO , any gear, toaster, TV or anything should work well at home, out of a store.

There are many sides to this.
Even a good factory setup doesn't necessarily survive the global shipping and possibly long storage time, accompanied by the huge variations in temperature and humidity in different parts of the world.
And even the best setups don't fit everybody; just think about you (like some relief) and me (like a neck as straight as possible), let alone the pro players...

But I agree that entry level instruments should (I use that in the meaning "it would be fair if they would") be playable right from a shop, since a lot of those end with people who have little or no experience with guitar setups.
And that's of course a question of money - at the moment, a shop adding setup costs (let's guess 40 moneys for the shop's costs) to a price of an entry level instrument (let's say 200 moneys) is out of the competition.

On my part, I try to educate beginners to invest in that setup anyways - it's usually money well spent. And, with a little searching & a little luck, one will find a guitar shop who takes pride in what they sell, and sets up the instruments before the customer gets them.

BTW, comparing guitars to other stuff might be potentially dangerous. Cheap bicycles, for example, are sold as assemble-it-yourself packages (and funny but the same applies to personalized high-end bikes). And don't get me started with IKEA... :lol:

I should have mentioned that the store is not a music shop but a retail store. I think I will get a refund instead of an exchange and go to a music shop. What is a reasonable price for a setup?

Few years ago Guitar Center charge $60.

Update;

Return the guitar and buy one you can try and play good.
Test it carefully

I ended up returning it and got a new one. The A string was buzzing a bit when I was tuning it up but it seems okay now. The guitar shop wanted half the price of the guitar to set up the last one!

No idea. First they tried selling me a much more expensive Strat because they had no Squiers. Surely it was obvious why I picked the Squier Strat over the Fender Strat!!

A complete set up ( a must ) must include ;

1-Check neck bow and adjust truss rod if need.
A wrong neck bow may need to leave the guitar in the shop one day
2- Check and adjust strings action.
3- Adjust tremolo if need.

That's the problem with inexpensive guitars (or cars, or anything).
The maintenance costs are the same as a more expensive model... an oil change is $30 whether it's a Corolla or a Lexus. Strings are $5 for a Squier or a DiCarlo.
Likewise, a setup is going to be ~$30 or more.
Like paying $600 for a set of tires for a $1,000 car, it is a lot in comparison, but it's still something that's needed.
That's also why it is wise to learn to do things yourself. Today, there are a TON of Youtube videos showing setups... Dave's World of Fun Stuff is one of the good ones and he gets into detail. 40 years ago, you figured it out yourself if you didn't have a mentor... and often you figured "wrong"... or maybe your mentor was not as good as you thought he was.

I agree with CB91710.

Guitar set up are very easy to do and to learn.
Everything you should do on a guitar over year is not a rocket science.
A guitar set up is often a matter of taste and how you play. A luthier or a guitar tech may not know what you need to set up the guitar at is best for you

Its pay to learn how.

Great book to learn, I have;
