I have an opportunity to pick up a Squier Strat made in China along with a Fender Frontman G for $135. I would be using this combo to take on trips to my cabin because I don`t want to take my expensive gear with me . I was wondering if anyone could tell me if these guitars are any good. Thanks in advance for any advice....

Well it sounds like you are not expecting much out of this stuff in which case you will be getting a descent deal. I would not comment on the guitar without seeing what it is actually like.

That being said the amp you are talking about is nothing special. It will not be particullarly clear and you probaby will not be that happy with it. This is one of the cheapest amps on the market for a reason.

Thanks for the reply Nic, I went to a local Sam Ash and found a Strat made in China. Their not so good, they go out of tune when you use the whammy bar and the edges of the frets are a bit rough so I decided to forget about it. I just picked up a used Frontman 25 R for $45, I`ll use my good Strat with it and leave my G Dec 30 home.

My Jagmaster is made in China and its awesome. I suggest you give them another shot as sometimes guitars in stores don't play well because they either have old strings and/or have been played by dozens of people who didn't wash their hands so the frets and neck look and feel crappy.

I found the Chinese Strats to be hit or miss. I don't own one, but out of about 10 that I tried, only a couple had smooth fret ends and overall decent playability. One in particular really felt quite good, and was tempting for the $150 tag. But I agree with the previous poster about poorly set up guitars and old strings. Some elbow grease and new strings go along way. The Chines Teles on the other hand I've found to be alot more consistent, and myself couldn't resist a VM Thinline in Shorline gold. And I absolutely love my drummers Afinity BSB. Both are way better than there price point suggests.

I have a 2006 Squier Standard Strat - the Cherryburst w/ Rosewood Fretboard. It's a beauty and sounds very nice. It was $200.

Gil...Very nice guitar . I`m going to keep looking at them, maybe I`ll come across one that feels better to me. The ones I`ve seen so far have rough edges on the ends of the frets, probably not filed down enough but after awhile it hurts your hand.

i have a chinese squier, and it's actually... almost perfect for a chinese model. the neck is soooo smoothe, the frets don't seem to bother me. the pickups are a tinsy bit weak, and the tuners and nut are cheap, so using the whammy bar will make the guitar go out of tune a little, but not all the time. Somehow i feel that i got one of those lucky squiers :) I named her Amber, cause she has a nice medium thickness tobacco sunburst (?) type body. Maybe i haven't played enough of the good strats, but when i play frets below the 12th fret, it almost sounds like a true fender! even on the high notes, but it sounds clearer with the bridge p-up. without the amp on, the notes really resonate and i can feel the vibration all over the body. i really like my guitar, and i can only imagine what owning a real fender is like! Soon... very soon...

as for the amps, you're better off the with a hot rod mini (fender), or a marhsall ms-2. maybe a mini '57 amp! they make good mini amps out there...
hope i helped!

I went back to the music store and found this Telecaster made in China. I never played one before but this guitar was very impressive. The neck and edges of the frets were smooth and it was finished nice. I decided to buy one , the Tele was $170 and the Strat I tried was $100 but there was a very big difference in the quality of the Tele. It was made much better and sounds pretty good so I think I did the right thing. [/img]

That's a good choice - the Squier Affinity Butterscotch Telecaster is a well made guitar. It gets good reviews at many guitar websites. It is on my GAS list for a future purchase.

Congrats and have some fun :P

PS My Cherryburst Strat was made in China too, and it's frets are perfect - no sharp edges - a very nice neck.

Gil, thats what I liked about the guitar, just like yours the neck is very good and no problem at all with the frets. Even the size of them is good for me so I`m using it along with the Frontman 25 R I picked up on craigslist for $ 45. I was just playing it and its a great guitar for the price and its perfect for what I want to use it for.
Now to get it past you know who...

That's the one that I bought and I LOOOOOVVVEEE it. I own some more expensive guitars - a couple of Gibsons, a Gretsch, a Ramirez, etc. - and this Tele is what I reach for 95% of the time. It's not what I expected but it's what happens.

I really like it a lot too. Sounds great and those single coil p/ups really put out. I also have 2 vintage guitars, a `63 Gretsch and a `69 LP and I got a new Am. Strat this year. I hear this Tele is a limited run, I wonder if there`s any truth to that.

I got mine about 4 years ago so I think it's only a limited run in the sense that at some point they'll stop making it.

I wrote in another thread that I was just in GC this weekend and played a '52 Butterscotch, American Standard Tele, MIM Tele, and the Squier Affinity Butterscotch back-to-back and all thru the same Fender amp. They all sounded really similar to me.

The '52 was blindingly gorgeous of course and I think it sounded 'slightly' better but I'm not so sure about the the Am. Standard or the MIM.

Bang for buck though the Squier's the winner by a mile.
