i think maybe you should get some hal leonard lessons if possible... online there's a cool site called nextlevelguitar.com, they have free videos there, or you could go on youtube and find them! i learned so much from them. if possible, get someone who knows how to play to watch you. it's much easier that way. But i'm mostly self taught, and i do pretty well! Just some advice: you may be discouraged if your fingers are too small for the neck. it takes some practice and exercising of the fingers. and if that squier and amp suck, don't be surprised :D i'm more concerned about the amp though... i'd sell it and get a marshall or roland... . Hope i helped. if you wanna know, i have played for about 1 1/2 to 2 years. and another thing: try to play your guitar WITHOUT THE AMP AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE. it lets you get the feel for your guitar, and when you start out, the string may buzz because of your inexperienced fingers, so the amp will only make it worse. Listen to your inspirations, watch them play. You have no idea how easier it is to learn the style of music you wanna play when you see it played:) And my last piece of advice: Learn TECHNIQUE, not songs. especially music theory. it may seem boring, but trust me, you won't believe how easy it will be to solo if you know the... let's say.. e minor pentatonic. or c major. then learn songs.

hope this isn't too much:)

If at all possible, don't buy the starter pack. I was young once too (a long time ago), and was givein money for amp and guitar (long before anyone thought of packaging them together. I bought some kinda cheap strat copy and a Peavey decade amp. I still have the amp, and it still plays. It's a small practice amp with no goodies such as headphone or CD input, but I can sit my big butt on it and it never winces.

It's tough as they come. Probably can't find one that well-made anymore. Doesn't sound as good as a big amp, but it has stood the test of time. The guitar, I was able to sell fairly quickly. It played for crap and looked just as bad. I bought a better strat copy and still have it too. Just recently put a new "loaded pickguard" on it and my son is learning to play on it.

But the nicest equipment you can poissibly afford. IF the guitar thing doesn't work out, you can hopefully recoup some of your investment. If you buy a starter pack, you;ll be sucking wind on resale.

Look at all the starter packs on Ebay. They rarely bring anything close to what they cost new. I would recommend stepping to the Squier standard, if you can. Not sure on the new amps. I'm still trying to decide myself on what our next amp will be. But it will have headphone and CD capability.

Good luck. And whatever you get, try to have fun with it. Don;t expect overnight success. It took Stevie Ray Vaughan nearly 20 years to become an overnight success. Practice your chords and scales. Over and over.

I think this is a really good book for learning to play:
