I gave a two Strat affinities (2004 Indo and 2008 China) and want to mod one without spending a lot of money to make it different. Any ideas? Change bridge pickup to hot rails? What cool mods have you made to improve your Squier?

On another topic you asked if the "blender" idea could be wired to an Affinity. Yes it can, and that would be a) relatively easy to do, if you can follow a diagram and solder properly, and b) definitely give a different sounding guitar, if you use the HotRails you mentioned.
ToneShapers has a very clear diagram: http://pdf.toneshapers.com/ToneShapers- ... S1-201.pdf

You know how to wire the HotRails single-coil style, without the splitting option, right?

Jmattis - thanks for the suggestion. The blender solution looks interesting. All I need to buy, is the blender pot (other than the hot rails)? With the blender diagram, should I do HSH or SSH or some other combo? Would the blender option be better with the hot rails than regular wiring? Also, if I use the HSH option with the blender, should I stay with the 250k volume and tone 1, or change to 500k? Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks again.

Just fumbling with the ideas:

"Better" (as in your "would the blender option be better with the hot rails than regular wiring") could mean a different thing to you and me. And, what's a 'regular' wiring for the Hot Rails..?

In the pic/pdf, the blender is wired to a regular SSS pickup set, so that could be the start point. Anything beyond that is highly a personal thang, depending on what you feel you need.

The HotRails in bridge would give a boost for soloing; that would be a HSS in Fender's usual language. Blender wiring or something else, that's what bridge humbuckers are usually for.

If at that point you feel you're missing power on the neck pickup, the HSH might come useful. Probably with a mid pup upgrade so it won't sound weak between those humbuckers.

Usually, Affinities have 500K pots if original. BTW, it's always a good idea to save a diagram of the original wiring.

If I understood your original thought, you're wanting a project, not a finished product. That's why I'm suggesting the step-by-step method; change this - wait for results - change that. Maybe leave one of the guitars (the one you like more…) original.

Good advice. What would you put in the middle? Thanks.

Hah - I'm a single coil fan so I wouldn't even start that modding.

But like I said, go step by step, giving yourself, your other gear and the guitar some time to get to know each other.

Consider if the mid pup needs to be changed when you get to the HSH stage (if you ever do - many, many players are quite happy with a HSS). By then, you know how hot the bridge and neck pickups are, so you can choose from the vast selection.
So with the mod candidate guitar I'm thinking/suggesting HSS > play time > blender > play time > HSH > play time > mid pup > play time.
