I recently purchased a 2005 MII Affinity series HSS Strat. Accourding to the Squier website, the new models are either agathis or alder. In an attempt to figure out which I had, I put it on a scale. I also weighed an 01 and 07 MIM Strats that I know are alder. All three guitars weighed the same.

That being said; am I right to assume that the Squier is alder? Would there be enough weight difference between alder and agathis to be noticed on an average house scale?

I think you have your answer in your own question. Going on memory here (and that's even fading) I'm under the assumption the newer Affinities are all Alder (hence it weighing the same as the 2 MIMS). Yes there is a noticable difference between the weight of the Alder and Agathis bodies. The 00' Standard I have is Agathis (Shoreline Gold with a beautiful Birdseye tinted Maple neck) and heavier than the 01' 3TS Alder Standard (Maple necked as well). Both are great platforms for modding......if this is your choice.

OT: Chris Guitars has an incredible modded 02' Standard 3TS (CTS 250k pots) just sitting out there for the taking. If the 01' I have wasn't mint, I'd pull the trigger on that baby!

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I was not sure and could not find anything about the comparable weight of the two woods. Not to mention, I do not know how accurate the cheap bathroom style scales are.

I bought the Squier because of the potential for modding that you mentioned. It's black with a white pickgaurd and rosewood finger board. It just came in yesterday, so I have not had much time to mess with it. Even with the crusty old strings that came on it, it sounded good.

Tonight my wife surprised me with a 2000 MII Squier Tele with a humbucker in the neck. Metallic green w/white pickgaurd and rosewood board on it too.

It looks like I know what I'll be doing tomorrow. Set-ups for all!!

No problem, just paying Fender forum dues. Visually that metallic green with the white guard and rosewood board sounds REAL nice. I bet that flake looks real good when it's polished. I wouldn't recommend the "bathroom" scale for weighing, until you can get a decent scale there's always your local Postal Station. Load em' up in the car and have at it.

good luck!
